The snow is melting and you might be wondering about those not-so-nice patches in your lawn. An article by Turfgrass Extension Educator @maggie_reiter in UMN Yard & Garden News, “What does winter injury look like on your lawn?”, can help you learn more! z.umn.edu/6qe9
If you are seeing vole damage after the snow melt, gently rake out the dead material once the turf is firm enough to walk on. Generally, vole damage will start to recover once we reach growing temperatures.

Japanese beetles have emerged. To avoid tree and shrub damage contact a certified arborist for options. It is the larvae of Japanese beetles that feed on turf, but contrary to popular belief treating your lawn for grubs will not prevent tree and shrub damage on your property.
Some DIY tips to avoid striping: 1) use a broadcast spreader, not drop spreader 2) don't open the spreader gate unless you are moving, and close before you stop 3) cut your rate by 1/4 and throw wheel track to wheel track, then do the lawn again at a 90 degree angle
If the lawn gets a little shaggy, take a couple extra minutes to raise the mowing height. With the heat and humidity coming, your lawn will not recover from scalping very quickly. Plus, excess clippings left on the lawn can block sunlight and lead to other kinds of damage.
Time to sharpen those blades if your lawn is looking like this! As humidity increases so will disease, and these wounds are great infection sites!
Starting to see some Crabgrass in the Cities. Look for it along curbs and anywhere you have bare soil. Even if a pre emergent was used, expect a little breakthrough. Easier to control in young stages.
Twin Cities lawns are going to seed. This may give your lawn a whitish or lime green hue, as well as a stalky, stemmy feel. You can mow off the seed heads, normal growth will return soon

Perfect weather for vole scouting... Active runs will be easy to see if you are looking for good spots for bait stations
I wish I knew who was telling everyone to scalp their lawns. If you are still trying to go lower, please step down slowly - turf will likely not recover this Fall from a scalp.
I know it's been hard to get everything done this Fall with the weather... But let's remember that aeration is supposed to alleviate compaction, not create it.
Don't give up on those lawns yet! If you're able to get out there, be sure to raise the mowing height. Still plenty of fall left to enjoy your yard
We went from dry to wet conditions, mid summer, which seems to always lead to Ascochyta. Try to mow when turf is dry, and or patient, recovery is quick
