Today I woke up healthy and in a safe place (physically + emotionally), drank some coffee, read a bit, went for a short run, and had brunch. It’s often the things deemed “little” and overlooked, both statistically + experientially, that require the most gratitude. AlHumdulillah!

5 exploratory laparotomies back to back for gunshot wounds to the abdomen , one of which had an inferior vena cava injury I repaired... while 8 months pregnant. Tell him to shut it!

Yesterday, a doctor urged me NOT to become a surgeon. He prefers to refer to male surgeons, who don’t take mat leave & told me that as a woman I shouldn't expect complex cases. Yes, our system is gendered & broken, which is EXACTLY why I want to become a surgeon. Happy #IWD

@beerluulah Every group of people have both good and toxic moms- we need to stop over praising Somali moms. They are humans and have flaws too. And for the people that are hurt by their moms- please seek help and may Allah swt grant you ease. There is really no need to create war III.
