Some of the countries with the Top 10 highest capital gains tax rates in the world are also on the list of the top 10 most innovative countries in the world: Denmark, Netherlands, Finland, Sweden. (Source: WIPO Global Innovation Index 2023, Tax Foundation adjusted to April 2024). I don't think anyone loves paying taxes (except maybe Mark Cuban), but what I'm most interested in as a small business owner in Canada and a long-time innovation champion is a better understanding of why our country has been lagging on the innovation index for many, many years. This certainly isn't a new problem and, sorry if I'm ageing myself here, but this isn't the first time people are threatening to leave this country and raising alarms about a brain drain. Two important side notes: 1) I left Canada to move to the U.S. in 1999 for four years to participate in the dot-com boom (and subsequent bust) - and also to more quickly pay off almost $40,000 of student debt (so, yes, I'm probably more inclined to relate to the average Canadian worker vs. the 1%). Also, returning to Canada was one of the best days of my life. 2) Today I run a small business with various investments and I too will be subject to this capital gains tax. For example, if I sell off one of these assets and realize a gain of $500,000, this new tax rate will be $156,129 vs. $133.825 - so a difference of $22,304 (Source: Globe & Mail). For us, this is still a pretty successful gain and small adjustment to live in a country that tops the freedom index - and, something that is more of a concern for me as of late based on the state of the world - Canada is also a top 10 place to live if you're a woman (incidentally, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Netherlands are also on this list - as shared above, they are also the most innovative countries in the world and those with the highest capital gains tax, among other high taxes). Knowing all of the above, which is based mostly on data, my question to my fellow leaders in the business community is what is the way forward to deal with what are obvious issues in this country on the innovation and productivity fronts? Also, I think it's important that we separate facts from feelings. Right now, I see a lot of latter. In conclusion, I am looking for the problem solvers in this country who are interested in solutions and a path forward. It would be grossly naive to think that the capital gains tax is going to swing this country further down the innovation index, but it's also clear we have many other issues that need immediate attention - such as, to borrow a phrase from my friends @BetaKit, the "woeful state of competition in Canada."
