@mattyglesias Adding for those not familiar with Chicago: CTU (Chicago Teachers Union) is a de facto political power run by its CORE faction, which has ideologues in charge. Johnson was a CTU organizer they ran for office, and he won.

@mattyglesias That's the difference between Mamdani and Brandon Johnson in Chicago. Mayor Johnson would no doubt fire a Tisch to satisfy his CTU allies that put him into office. That's because Mamdani is grafted onto the NYC power structure, while Johnson acts as if he has absolute power.

@NickyFrank30 It’s a policy goal for progressives to purge Jews out the Democratic Party, and some of them are very clear about this online. Either that or create an alternative “diasporist” Judaism with token representation. That’s fringe now, but it’s where I see them going

@SaraHirschhorn1 It's a symptom of how everything from the "Halachic Left" to IfNotNow are seeking to create an alternate Judaism that will supercede the mainstream Jewish structure we know. But their funding will be coming from small donors and non-Jewish sponsors.

But his other songs that he’s known for in 1974-1978 like “With Your Love”, “Runaway”, and “Count on Me” were written by others. I think he wrote some of the lyrics on “St. Charles” though.

@saidmehr_simone It comes across as incredibly bad taste to link with October 7th, but if you Google there really is something called "blush sauce". That's a combo of cream, tomato paste and sometimes white wine, sometimes called a rose sause. Still yuck.

@ZachLewis3187 We've reached a point where the decision by Ferrara to continue making Sunkist Fruit Gems feels like a triumph for American Jewry. It's a win that at least slightly disrupts the narrative of erasing a candy associated with Jewish events from American life.

@thisandthaatt @MaxNordau They don't use Lev Shalem at Reform Shuls. But they left it kind of vague what the shul denomination is. HUC (a lead Reform rabbinical academy) allows students to be in interfaith relationships, but it's recent.

@thisandthaatt @MaxNordau In Season 1 they had Lev Shalem, which is used at Conservative shuls. The culture of the shul felt Conservative from what we saw (the senior rabbi and the congregants). Also the attitude toward intermarriage and conversion.

@songsofyoni A little older than you (almost 39 then) but that “end of history” feel was real. The Cold War was over, Russia and the US had a mildly friendly relationship, the Middle East still had a hope of two states and peace, and there were gov’t budget surpluses.

@CoreyWriting I think the conversation starts with UK style sanctions over the Green Line and moves to using executive orders to implement an arms embargo even on defensive weapons. Maybe limiting visas & downgrading diplomatic relations. Economic stuff sets up conflict with state legislation

@admcrlsn Putting Daniel Biss (IL-09) and Julia Stratton (IL-Senate) in the same category of “progressive” feels strange. BIss is much further left on foreign policy.

@lilbuddymax Minor nitpick: the Roman Empire didn't transition to "Byzantine"; the East Romans retained a Roman identity after the split of the Empire. Nobody called the East Romans "Byzantines" until historians after the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Rather they were "Romans and "Rhomanoi"
