Why is the end of June seasonally weak? 📆 It is not sentiment. It is mechanics. Three calendar-driven flows converge in the last week of the quarter, and none of them care about your thesis. 1. Quarter and half-year-end rebalancing, June 30. Pension funds, target-date funds, and 60/40 portfolios drift off their target weights as markets move. After a strong equity quarter, stocks are overweight versus bonds. To get back to mandate, they mechanically sell equities and buy fixed income. Tens of billions, price-insensitive, dated to the calendar. This is the closest thing to "forced selling," but it is not panic. It is policy. 2. Russell reconstitution, effective at the close this Friday, June 26. Every fund tracking the Russell has to match the new index exactly. They buy the additions and sell the deletions at the close to minimize tracking error. It is routinely one of the highest-volume days of the year. Over $217B traded at last year's recon close. Forced buying and forced selling at once, all mechanical. 3. Post-quad-witching gamma reset. Quad witching was June 19. After a large expiration, dealer hedging resets and some of the stabilizing pin comes off, letting the tape move more freely into month-end. The point: this is price-insensitive flow. Funds transacting to hit mandates and match indices regardless of value. It can open air pockets that have nothing to do with fundamentals, and it frequently unwinds in early July. So when hedging flow clusters on these exact dates, you understand it. It is not smart money calling a top. It is the calendar doing what the calendar does. Know the mechanics. It is the difference between reacting to a price and understanding a flow. 🧐
