The average medical costs per gun injury are $37,435, versus $10,798 per survivor participating in a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP). Research shows that HVIPs are a promising way to reduce violence and prevent reinjury by helping wounded survivors heal.

The average medical costs per gun injury are $37,435, versus $10,798 per survivor participating in a hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP). Research shows that HVIPs are a promising way to reduce violence and prevent reinjury by helping wounded survivors heal.

A strong predictor of future violent injury is having been hospitalized for a past one. Studies show HVIP participants’ reinjury rates were at least half those of hospitalized survivors who didn’t participate. These programs can save hospitals and taxpayers significant amounts.
HVIPs reduce repeat hospitalizations of gunshot victims, decreasing both the human and financial toll of this violence. HVIPs meet gunshot survivors at their bedside and support them with non-medical needs that help with recovery and prevent reinjury and retaliation. #HVIPs
