How do you get closer to God when you feel absolutely nothing? Most people assume closeness to God is supposed to feel like something. Warmth in your chest. Tears in worship. A sense that He’s right there in the room. So when you pray and the room stays quiet, when you open your Bible and the words just sit on the page, the conclusion comes fast: something is wrong with me, or He’s gone. Neither is true. But almost nobody tells you that, so people quietly drift away during the exact season God is doing some of His deepest work in them. Look at who felt this before you. David wrote, “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” Psalm 13:1. That’s not a backslider talking. That’s a man God called a man after His own heart. Jesus Himself, on the cross, prayed the words of Psalm 22:1: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Feeling far from God is not proof that you are far from God. It is one of the most human experiences in the entire Bible. And notice where God actually showed up for Elijah. Not in the wind that broke the rocks. Not in the earthquake. Not in the fire. After all of that came a low whisper, 1 Kings 19:11-12. Sometimes the reason we feel nothing is that we’re waiting for the earthquake, and God is speaking in the whisper. So here’s the honest answer: you get closer to God the same way you get closer to anyone. You keep showing up when it isn’t exciting. “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you,” James 4:8. The promise isn’t that you’ll feel Him draw near. It’s that He will. Your feelings are weather. His faithfulness is the climate. “His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning,” Lamentations 3:22-23. Try this tonight. Don’t perform. Don’t try to manufacture a feeling. Sit down, open to one psalm, read it slowly, and then tell God the truth: “I don’t feel You right now, but I’m here.” That sentence is not weak faith. That is faith in its purest form, trust with nothing propping it up. You may feel nothing tonight. Come back tomorrow anyway. One day you’ll look back on this quiet stretch and realize He never left the room. He was teaching you to love Him for who He is, not for how He makes you feel.

A high school girl in Mexico just won a gold medal for putting out fires with a speaker. It plays one deep, low hum and the flames die in about 5 seconds. DARPA tried the same idea back in 2012 with a rig so big and clunky they never took it any further, and hers runs on a 12-volt battery and a speaker she can carry around. Sound is just air being pushed back and forth. A low note at 30 hertz means the air around the flame is flipping direction 30 times every second. Flames only exist in a thin layer where fuel vapor mixes with oxygen. Shake that layer hard enough and it keeps getting stretched thinner, the heat gets pulled away faster than the flame can make more, and eventually the flame rips right off the fuel. Whatever tears off is too cool to keep burning, so it just goes out. DARPA's report put a number on how little it takes. Once the air at the flame is moving about half a meter per second, which is barely a breeze, the flame goes out, and pretty much any pitch can get there if you crank the power high enough. Low notes just get you there way cheaper, because a speaker moves a lot more air on each push when the pitch is low. Two engineering students at George Mason figured this out by trial and error in 2015. They started with super high pitches, 20,000 to 30,000 hertz, and all the flames did was shiver. It only worked once they dropped down to 30 to 60 hertz, which is basically the bass on a hip-hop track. Ángela Karime's build is a 12-volt battery, a frequency generator, an amplifier and a speaker, tuned to 30 hertz. She named it Vortex Tech and talks about it shooting out little rings of air, and that's real physics. When loud, low sound gets pushed through a narrow opening, the air curls up into rings like a smoke ring, and those rings carry a puff of air way farther than the sound would get on its own. In her tests it put out small flames from about 2 meters away. She went through five prototypes and over 100 tests in about a year, and she says it's put out burning wood, flammable liquids, electronics and cooking oil. The cooking oil one is a big deal. Throw water on a grease fire and it flashes into steam and flings burning oil all over your kitchen, which is exactly the kind of fire where you'd want something that doesn't put anything into the pan. Now, sound can't cool anything down, so a big fire sitting on red-hot fuel can come right back the second the speaker shuts off. The George Mason guys worried about the same thing in 2015, and it's why this is still a prototype for small flames and the red extinguisher under your sink isn't going anywhere yet. Space might end up being where this matters first. Up there water floats off in blobs, while sound works the same with or without gravity, and acoustics researchers have already published experiments on fighting fires with sound on spacecraft. She's still in high school, and she's already working on a version that spots a fire and puts it out by itself. The gold in Indonesia also came with a special award that gets her into another international competition.

Nothing against Stallone — absolute legend of a man. But on the subject of Arnold Schwarzenegger, the comedian Bill Burr said it best. And I paraphrase here, but he essentially said: “The guy hardly spoke any English, came up out of nowhere, became the world’s most famous bodybuilder, then the king of the Hollywood box office, then married into American royalty (the Kennedy’s) and became governor… and he did all that while looking and sounding like the type of thing Doctor Frankstein would have created.” Burr said that in any other universe, a man with a face and accent Schwarzenegger would have just be moving furniture in Transylvania — it was basically only through his extreme drive and the raw force of his presence that he got to the point where he is now. Men like him weren’t “Hollywood material”, let alone politician material… they were bouncers, professional wrestlers, strongmen, gangsters, at best would play a two-bit henchman in a Bond flick to be disposed of with a witty oneliner and forgotten about… As charismatic as Stallone no doubt is, in his own right, he doesn’t hold a candle to Arnold. Because Bill Burr was right — it takes an extraordinary man to make it from a tiny town in Austria to King of Hollywood action movies and do all that with the thickest foreign accent any actor in English movie history has ever had. And get away with it through the sheer power of your unbreakable charisma.

Reading contemporary literature is a detestable, repulsive experience. I don’t enjoy it at all, and for me, it’s quite literally a chore I have to fulfill as part of my job as a literary critic. I’ve been thinking about why so many people in our society view reading as a tedious chore, and I wonder if it has to do with the sorts of books we keep churning out today. I love reading more than anything in the world, and I can get lost in classic literature for several hours at a time. But reading contemporary literature feels like a completely different activity. I, too, would hate reading if that was all I never knew. The answer to the reading crisis is to publish better, deeper books that challenge the limits of your mind.
