Astaxanthin has gained a lot of traction in the past few months due to its efficiency as a UV blocker, but it has trade-offs.(like any supplement) More specifically, it's a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. And it doesn't just cause minor inhibition, it's actually highly efficacious>over 50% (in a human study), which places it up there with the likes of finasteride and dutasteride. If you're unaware of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, I'll try to summarize them in layman's terms. 5-alpha reductase inhibitors block the conversion of testosterone into its more potent androgenic form> dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This can be detrimental in some cases as DHT is an important androgen hormone that affects: - Secondary male characteristics (facial hair, jawline, deep voice) - Libido (5-alpha inhibitors, can shut down ARS) - GABA levels (higher DHT = higher GABA levels) - Muscle growth im not saying to cut it out completely, but tread carefully.
