@WXWatcher07 "Historic" depends on the ruler. This week the Pacific reads +2.9 on the index NOAA retired on February 1, 2026 and +2.0 on the new official one. On the new index 1982-83 is the biggest ever and 2023-24 never made the top bracket at all.

@anttsinc The Kelvin wave is real: NOAA Fisheries puts it at about six inches of sea level moving at about six miles an hour, and the spring ones reached California in May without anyone noticing. "Worst in history" is still a forecast; the official June-August number is +1.4, "moderate."

@wxluizfelippe NOAA's own caveat for this one: the three big El Niño winters all had a positive Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and 2026 does not, which NOAA says "may dampen the typical impacts." The NHC archive for 2026 so far: five tropical storms, zero hurricanes.

@Revelation1217 One number that is already in: the FAO's September 4 index put sugar up 11.9% in a month and named El Niño weather in Asia as a cause. The USDA's August food price outlook has sugar and sweets up 7.4% and does not mention El Niño once.

@RyanWeather The last super one, 2015-16, was the warmest US winter on record at the time. Central Park hit 63°F on Christmas Eve. Keep the shovel for the one storm that ignores the outlook: that same winter dropped 27.5 inches on New York in a day.

@ElijahBman The record cuts both ways. February 1998: Santa Barbara got 21.74 inches in one month, a record since 1867. Winter 2015-16: NOAA favored rain from SoCal to Florida and downtown LA ended at 9.65 inches, 68% of normal. NOAA calls it "the failed Southern California winter rains."

@ChrisMartzWX One forecaster went city by city through the three big El Niño winters (82-83, 97-98, 15-16). Arizona's high country came in above normal snow in all three. Seattle came in below normal in all three. Everywhere else was a coin toss.

@spann NOAA's September 17 discussion puts the Gulf and Southeast coasts at 70-80% for a wet winter, the highest odds on the map. In October 2015 the same outlook told the South to replace the roof before winter. Florida used it; downtown LA got 68% of normal rain.

@BenNollWeather NOAA's own snow study calls El Niño "the great snowfall suppressor." Then 2015-16 happened: warmest US winter on record at the time, and the same season gave New York its biggest snowstorm ever, 27.5 inches. Snow does not read outlooks.

NOAA has never called it a "super" El Niño. Not on any page we could find. Its official number right now says "moderate." The +2.0°C from September 14 is one week's reading; "very strong" is a forecast. Which ruler you hold decides "strongest ever." Link in the reply.
