When driving at night always remember that it can be hard to judge distance and speed of oncoming vehicles based on their headlights, bright lights from large vehicles can overpower the lights from smaller low powered lights like motorcycles or cyclists.

If you have to slow down or stop on a carriageway because of traffic or an obstruction, turn on your hazmats warning lights to notify people behind you there is a hazard ahead! When you are sure the drivers behind have seen them remember to turn them off!

When driving and you need to turn around always remember the following, it’s usually much safer to find a side street for your manoeuvre, always be prepared to stop for oncoming traffic and keep your eyes open for pedestrians, they can hide in your blind spots!

Always remember when driving downhill, you will find it more difficult to slow down and the brakes will not be as effective, it’s harder for the engine to control your speed, if your gear is too high it won’t help at all, avoid coasting at all costs.

Always stop at the line accompanying a stop sign. The view from these junctions will always be limited, only move off when you are sure it’s safe!

Be aware when approaching low bridges, large vehicles will need to use the centre of the road to make use of extra headroom!

Use Dipped headlights when driving in the rain to make sure other road users can see you! Rain can block your view of the road particularly in your side mirrors and if your windows are dirty, always keep your washer bottle topped up!

When you signal to other drivers, always make sure you are using the correct signal, make sure your signal gives a clear instructions to other road users (including pedestrians) and the signal is given in good time so others can react.

When attempting a U turn, always ask yourself, Is it safe? Is it legal, is it convenient and is the road wide enough, if you are unsure of any of those questions then find a more suitable place!

When parking in car parks, it will nearly always be easier to reverse into the space you want to park in. It will also be easier for you to drive away, especially at night or if you have people sitting in the back of your car.

When you decided to park on the side of the road, always ask yourself the following questions; 1, is it safe? 2, is it legal? 3, is it convenient? If you answer yes to all three questions you are go to go!

Visibility can be made worse when driving in the rain because of spray thrown up form other vehicles especially large ones! Reduce your speed and turn on your headlights that will make it easier for other road users to see you.

Only ever stop on a motorway for the following reason, a red light or other sign tells you too, you are asked to by police, traffic officers or DVLA officers, it’s an absolute emergency or to prevent an incident!

Areas of Hatch markings on the road, separate the traffic form either side of the road and protect traffic turning right. If the boundary line is solid don’t enter unless in an emergency, if the boundary line is broken only enter if you can see it’s safe to do so!

There are five main types of junctions, T Junctions, Y Junctions, Staggered Junctions, crossroads and Roundabouts. Each type has many different variations and each one needs to be dealt with individually! Approaching these junction at the appropriate speed is allways a good start

Remember that road positioning is an important signal to other road user, make sure you’re position is correct for the route you are going to take. Keep left if you are going left or straight ahead, keep close to the Center of the road if turning right!
