J.J. McCarthy, while speaking on Zoom with media members just now, had to decline a call from Wayne Gretzky. McCarthy was a big-time hockey player growing up. His marketing agent is apparently close with Gretzky.

#Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah: "Obviously, I'm a spreadsheet, calculator guy myself, but sometimes you gotta step out from there, take your Clark Kent glasses off, and just have a championship mindset and swing for a great player."
Kevin O’Connell is excited about getting J.J. McCarthy and says Dallas Turner has the skills to be “a dominant player on the edge for us.” “We’re off to a very, very good start.”
The Vikings gave up a lot to get the two players they picked tonight. Two second-rounders (to get 23), a third-rounder, two fourth-rounders, and two fifth-rounders to get up to 10 and 17. But also...they got J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah says he “can’t believe” the Vikings got both JJ McCarthy and Dallas Turner tonight. He’s over the moon to be adding two “cornerstone” players to the roster.
In an era where many prospects are entering the NFL after five or six years of college, the Vikings have drafted two true juniors with their first-round picks tonight. J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner both turned 21 earlier this year.
For the first time since 2005, the Vikings have drafted an edge rusher in the first two rounds. Dallas Turner had 11 sacks and 15.5 total TFL last year for Alabama, earning consensus All-American honors. Jonathan Greenard, Andrew Van Ginkel, and Turner off the edge...whew.
The Vikings traded up and are taking Alabama EDGE Dallas Turner with the 17th pick. Lots of analysts had him as the top pass rusher in this draft. J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner is quite the haul.
#Vikings are on the clock at 17! They gave up a 2024 fifth, a 2025 third, and a 2025 fourth to move up six spots. Two trades up the board for Kwesi.
The Falcons called Kirk Cousins when they were on the clock to let him know. From what I learned, Cousins understood a QB would be considered but he did not believe his successor would be taken in the first round. I’m told he’s a bit stunned.

J.J. McCarthy is the Vikings’ quarterback of the future. Now Minnesota needs to extend Justin Jefferson and lock in the JJ-to-JJ connection for what could be the next decade if everything pans out.
Getting J.J. McCarthy at 10 feels like a major win for the Vikings. He's a great fit for Kevin O'Connell's offense, and they didn't have to give up much to get him. I wouldn't be surprised if Kwesi now trades down a bit from 23 to get some draft capital back. We'll see.
