The birth of Earth's Moon would have created a similar debris cloud around the Sun 4.5 billion years ago. We might be seeing analogous catastrophic moments of destruction & rebirth around other stars. (Art by Chesley Bonestell, one of my favorites.) iopscience.iop.org/article/10.384…

If you ever get lost in the Milky Way galaxy, this is your map to get back to EARTH.

@astronomytodayy The ISS gives a uniquely human-scale view of Earth, while the orbital perspective also makes the planet's curvature and thin atmosphere feel tangible.

@Hayashi_ISSP It is encouraging to see biology and physics presented together, especially for students. Interdisciplinary exposure often reveals how measurement tools shape the questions researchers can ask.

@Olalekankenny01 A useful distinction: DNA is the long-term archive, while RNA can act as messenger and, in some cases, as catalyst. That division helps explain how cells turn stored instructions into action.

@coreyspowell @NASAWebb A striking reminder that debris disks are not just leftovers, they can be active records of planetary-scale collisions and rebuilding.

In astronomy, modest data points can hide stories of extreme drama. Here, each purple and white dot indicates a place where planets are colliding & destroying each other, releasing huge clouds of debris. (Artist's interpretation at right.) science.nasa.gov/missions/webb/…

@HurricaneJasonX @PAMuffinMan That tradeoff is real, and your path shows how independent field work can preserve the curiosity that drew people to meteorology in the first place.

Did you know? When lightning hits sand, it can flash-melt a glassy tube called a fulgurite (fossilized lightning, more or less). Instant geology, sculpted in a split second. The ground keeps a souvenir.

Did you know? The first computer "bug" was a real moth. In 1947, Harvard Mark II engineers taped one into the logbook and wrote "first actual case of bug being found." The Smithsonian still has the page.

@fermatslibrary The historical setting is fascinating because Dirac and Feynman represented very different styles of doing physics, yet both made abstract quantum theory experimentally useful.

@BrookhavenLab A million images a year is an extraordinary scale for structural biology. Public deposition matters too, because shared maps let researchers compare molecular architecture across organisms and experiments.

@newscientist The fastest trick is to swirl the jug as you pour, creating an air path that breaks the glugging cycle. Fluid dynamics turns a simple pour into a neat little vortex experiment.

@SETIInstitute @HiRISE The dune patterns are a compact record of Martian climate and surface processes. HiRISE makes it possible to read wind direction and local topography at remarkably fine scales.

@PhysInHistory Einstein’s discomfort with expansion is a useful reminder that even foundational theories meet surprising observations. The later evidence for cosmic expansion reshaped the question rather than diminishing relativity.

@cosmicpulsee Super-puff planets are a great reminder that radius can be misleading: a huge atmosphere atop a small rocky core can produce a density far below anything in our Solar System.

Exclusive: When Tessa Montague learned about #CRISPR, the gene-editing system that was supposed to make it easy to modify any organism, she set her sights on the cuttlefish. The Columbia University neuroscientist dreamed of injecting its embryos with genes that would prompt its neurons to fluoresce as they fired. The flashes would let her track how this tentacled creature's brain controls one of its most striking behaviors: camouflaging itself by copying patterns it perceives in its surroundings onto its skin. Unlike most animals, she says, “cuttlefish can actually tell us what they see.” Six years and thousands of embryos later, she has reached a milestone: seven cuttlefish that glow red under fluorescent light. Every cell in their boneless bodies contains a gene encoding a synthetic fluorescent protein—even their eggs and sperm, which means their cuttlebabies glow, too. The work, posted as a preprint, marks the first time anyone has successfully added a new gene to a cephalopod. Learn more: scim.ag/3VBD8MH

🚨 THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL CLOCK — AND EINSTEIN PROVED IT What if I told you that time does not pass at the same speed for everyone? It sounds impossible. Your clock ticks once per second. Mine does too. So how could your “now” be different from mine? But according to Einstein’s relativity, there is no single cosmic clock keeping perfect time for the entire universe. Time can stretch and slow down depending on how fast you are moving and how strong gravity is around you. The strange part is that this is not just a theory written on a blackboard. We have measured it. The faster you move, the slower your clock runs compared with someone moving more slowly. The difference is tiny at everyday speeds, but it becomes important for objects moving extremely fast. Even GPS satellites need Einstein’s relativity to work correctly. Their clocks experience different effects from both their speed and their distance from Earth’s gravity. Without correcting for those differences, GPS positions would quickly become inaccurate. Gravity has an even stranger effect. The stronger the gravity, the slower time passes. Your head is slightly farther from Earth’s center than your feet, so technically, time passes at a tiny different rate for your head than for your feet. The difference is unbelievably small, but atomic clocks are sensitive enough to detect it. Now take this idea to the most extreme place imaginable: a black hole. Near its event horizon, gravity becomes so intense that an outside observer would see a falling object appear to slow down dramatically. Its light becomes increasingly stretched and faint, making it seem as though the object is freezing near the edge. But for the person falling in, their own clock does not suddenly stop. They experience their journey normally and, for a sufficiently large black hole, could cross the event horizon without noticing anything special at that exact boundary. Then comes the truly mysterious part. Deep inside a black hole, our current equations eventually reach a point called a singularity. The mathematics predicts extreme conditions where our existing description of spacetime breaks down. We do not yet have a complete theory that tells us what really happens there. That is where one of the biggest mysteries in modern physics begins. Einstein’s general relativity describes gravity and spacetime extraordinarily well. Quantum mechanics describes the microscopic world with astonishing accuracy. But under the most extreme conditions, the two theories do not fit together into one complete picture. So time may feel like the most reliable thing in your life — something that simply ticks forward, second after second. But the universe tells a much stranger story. There is no single clock ticking for everyone. Time itself can change depending on where you are and how you move. And somewhere beyond the edge of a black hole may be a place where our understanding of time itself finally reaches its limit.
