Web3 desperately needs a better hiring platform. I know so many talented people actively looking for opportunities, yet their inboxes are flooded with scammers instead of legitimate job offers. We have an entire industry built on innovation, but somehow finding a real job still feels like navigating a minefield.
The name is Yakama Nation, not Yakima Nation. That error is a small one. The larger error is treating every dollar that hits a tribal government as a secret kickback scheme. Some of the criticism is real. A lot of the popular version of it is sloppy.
Here is the honest, critical version.
The extra layer taxpayers do not get to vote on
Washington and the federal government do not treat the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation like a private contractor. They treat it as another government. Under RCW 39.34, tribes are “public agencies.” Under RCW 43.376, state agencies are told to run government-to-government relationships. Treaty co-management of fish and habitat in the Yakima Basin is treated as a reason to put the tribe in the owner’s chair. On reservation work, TERO rules push Indian preference in hiring and subcontracting. Construction performed for a tribe in Indian country can be exempt from ordinary state sales and B&O tax.
That combination is the story. The tribe is not required to win the same open low-bid fight a private firm faces for a state highway job. Once the award is in tribal hands, the tribe can bid the dirt work, the bridge, the culvert, or the solar install to a third party. The public sees the press release. It rarely sees the markup, the TERO fee, the short bidder list, or whether a non-tribal firm could have done the same job cheaper.
That is a legitimate complaint. Cities and counties do the same thing when they hire a general contractor. The difference is that a city still has to follow state public-works bidding, and its books are easier to follow. A sovereign government is not a vendor. It is also not a fully transparent state agency.
What the money actually is — and what it is not
A complete line-item of every award for the last ten years does not exist in one clean public table. Federal awards are split across USAspending profiles, HHS TAGGS, HUD housing authorities, NOAA, Reclamation, DOE, and Corps of Engineers vehicles. State awards sit in Commerce, Ecology, RCO/Salmon Recovery Funding Board, and interlocal agreements that never look like a “bid tab.” Anyone who claims a single profit number for “the Yakama Nation middleman” is inventing it.
What public records do show:
Federal tracking sites list large, overlapping totals because they count different things.
One USAspending child-recipient profile for the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation lists about $109.5 million across 285 transactions, concentrated at Interior, HHS, Commerce/NOAA, Justice, and Energy.
• A vendor profile used by contract-tracking sites lists roughly $653 million in federal contract and grant funding since 2001, not just the last decade
• HHS TAGGS shows a grand total of about $423 million in HHS awards to the tribe across years and programs (IHS combined health services, Head Start, behavioral health, substance-use grants). That is health and social-service money, not a stack of flipped construction bids.
Yakama Nation Housing Authority has a long-running HUD Indian Housing Block Grant with about $118 million obligated on a single multi-year award that began in 2011 and still receives annual increments. That is housing formula money, not a one-off “contract flip.”
Annual federal spending on the main tribal recipient, from USAspending year lines, ran in the tens to low hundreds of millions in recent fiscal years, including roughly $47 million (FY2016), $42 million (FY2017), $57 million (FY2018), $76 million (FY2019), $146 million (FY2020), $196 million (FY2021), $72 million (FY2022), $108 million (FY2023), $104 million (FY2024), $118 million (FY2025), and $93 million so far in FY2026.
Those figures mix grants and contracts and are not “profit.”
Documented awards that match the “award then subcontract” pattern
These are public, recent, and large enough to matter. Most are grants or cooperative agreements, not sealed low-bid state construction contracts.
On the construction side, the tribe itself advertises the downstream bids: forest-road bridges, Pom Pom Road bridge and culvert, Snake Creek passage, Dry Creek wood harvest. Those solicitations tell contractors they need a Yakama business license, that tribally owned firms are preferred, and that TERO hiring rules apply.
That is the “middleman” step, in plain view. It is not hidden. It is also not the same as a competitive WSDOT prime award to the lowest responsible bidder.
Where the criticism holds
1. Competition is thinner than politicians admit. Cultural-resource monitoring, hatchery operations, and some reservation construction are routinely sole-source or one-offer awards. “Only the tribe has the knowledge” is sometimes true. It is also a convenient way to skip a fight over price.
2. The public cannot follow the second hop. Once the state or feds cut the check to the tribal government, the subcontract, TERO assessment, and any administrative slice are tribal-side. Taxpayers who funded the job do not get a state bid opening on the work that actually moves dirt.
3. Tax treatment changes the math. Prime construction for a tribe in Indian country can drop sales and B&O tax that a county job would collect. That can make the tribal path cheaper on paper even if the third-party contractor is the same firm that would have bid the county job.
4. Climate and salmon programs have become a preferred pipeline. Commerce CCA tribal resilience money, Ecology floodplain grants, SRFB awards, and Reclamation WaterSMART packages stack on the same recipient. Legislators get a ribbon-cutting. They do not have to defend a low bid.
5. Awards are not profit. IHS clinics, Head Start, housing block grants, and suicide-prevention money are not “the tribe flipping a contract.” Lumping those dollars into a middleman narrative is how a fair fight over procurement turns into a smear.
Where the popular attack falls apart
The Yakama Nation is a treaty tribe with reserved fishing rights and a reservation. State and federal agencies have spent decades putting the tribe in the lead on Yakima Basin fish passage because courts and statutes pushed them there, not because a legislator needed a donor. Subcontracting heavy construction is what almost every government does. Calling that “middleman corruption” without showing inflated change orders, ghost subcontractors, or stolen funds is rhetoric, not an audit.
If the standard is “no sovereign government should ever receive taxpayer money and then hire a contractor,” the same standard would ban every city public-works department in Washington. That is not a serious rule. The serious rule is: if public money is used, the second contract should be as visible as the first.
What an actual accountability demand looks like
• Publish every state grant and interlocal that names the Yakama Nation, the amount, and the subcontractor who performed the work.
• Require a public bid abstract on any subcontract over a set dollar amount when state or federal funds pay the bill.
• Separate formula health and housing money from discretionary construction and climate grants so critics stop mixing clinic funding with culvert jobs.
• Audit TERO fees and tribal admin percentages on state-funded projects the same way the State Auditor looks at a city.
Until that happens, politicians will keep announcing tribal awards as moral victories, and critics will keep calling every subcontract a scam. Both sides are selling a simpler story than the ledgers support. The ledgers support a narrower charge: public money is being routed through a sovereign government that does not bid like a vendor and does not disclose like a state agency. That is worth criticizing. It is not proof that the last ten years of awards were a slush fund. The documents do not say that. They say the pipeline is large, layered, and harder to watch than a normal state contract — which is exactly why it should be watched harder.

In other words, there is only plan A because if you have a plan B you’re not serious enough
A Trump White House advisor just said socialism in America is inevitable.
Not possible.
Inevitable.
David Friedberg sits on Trump’s science and tech council.
His claim:
The more government “helps” with college, healthcare, and housing…
the more expensive those things get.
Federal student loans didn’t make college affordable.
They made tuition unlimited.
Admin staff went from 10% of campuses to 60%.
No market force left to stop the price.
63% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.
Things cost more than wages.
So both parties say the same thing:
“The government will do more.”
He says that’s fuel on the fire.
The American advantage was never a house.
It was the jump from labor to capital.
Work. Save. Own assets. Stop living month to month.
Socialism kills that jump.
Everyone stays labor forever.
No one gets free.
He said he’s been predicting a socialist wave for five years.
After Trump won, he doubled down.
His words:
“It is absolutely inevitable.”
It's completely unnecessary to destroy books when machines like this exist.
This book scanner by Treventus for example, can scan fragile books without destroying it.
🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're
WTF
AI companies are purchasing large quantities of used and rare books. Scanning their contents to train models. Then turning the originals to pulp.
The sum of human thought, digitized and shredded.
Every book that gets scanned disappears from the physical world permanently. The knowledge survives only as training data inside a system no one can hold, browse, or resell.
What used to sit on a shelf for centuries now exists as weights in a model that might get deprecated next quarter.
🚨🗞️NEW: Why the Math Doesn't Work for a July 4 Clarity Act
With just 9 working days before recess, lawmakers still need to resolve ethics, merge texts & navigate procedural hurdles.
But there’s still optimism about the bill’s passage this year.

Sen. Phil Fortunato explains the recent operating budget debate and outlines his amendment promoting zero‑based budgeting. He describes how reviewing 25% of the state budget every two years would improve accountability, requiring agencies to justify spending from zero rather than relying on incremental increases. #waleg
