Longstanding PRs are the carbon monoxide of software engineering.
If you don't have a way to detect it before symptoms appear, you will suffer greatly.
Got humbled by 2 “non-technical” founders:
One couldn't recall the DB or language her product uses.
Another launched a dating app by uploading screenshots to ChatGPT until it worked.
Both shipped faster & hit profit before me.
Maybe it’s us engineers who are doing it wrong.
The best time to start a company isn't when you're most qualified.
Two main reasons
1) You're more skilled later, but also more sensitive to failure
2) You get better at believing your own BS as you age
This is the actual diagram from the 2001 SMTP proposal (RFC2821).
I love how simple it is.
The proposal uses basic English and draws on a mailbox analogy, making it easy to understand.
The engineers who embrace simplicity are the ones who shape the internet.
Specs, not code, are the new fundamental unit of programming.
👆 Summary of Sean Grove's excellent talk, "The New Code"
One implication I can't stop thinking about: the value of clear thought is about to skyrocket.
As AI continues to devalue the skill of writing code by hand, what aspects of the stack should builders invest in instead?
My answer:
→ Brand (building an audience)
→ Architecture (adding constraints to AI code)
→ learning AI (so you can build more atop it)
What's missing?
Most VC-backed SaaS sites feel the same:
- Generic headline
- Sans
- Gradient hero
- Logo carousel
It works—but it’s not us.
@CompassCalendar is open-source & bootstrapped.
So we modeled our site after a video game intro instead.
Whimsical, but ambitious. Like the product.
