In econ "secular" means long-term. In normal English means non-religious. TIL: same Latin origin, saecularis: "of a generation, belonging to an age". Why? Econ view: of an age, so long time. Medieval Christian view: of an age, so short, this temporal world, not the spiritual one.

this is a really cool talk of a kind that should be done more across different fields in econ. very easy to get stuck in a given paradigm/class of workhorse models. important to be able to really step back and wonder what might be missing, what other directions one might take.

this, but feels like there are lessons here we haven't grappled with yet. this stuff involved (1) complex public-private partnerships, (2) huge scale + risky R&D projects. both (1) + (2) are very different from normal corporate innovation. if we return to latter after, then what?

Walter Oi was one of my professors. Early in grad school he was at a workshop with his dog Jeanie. The talk was way over my head. Equations filled the black board. Deep in, Walter raises his hand and says, pointing to his left, “that equation is wrong.” Correct!

Yesterday was Walter Oi's b-day. Son of immigrants, spent WWII a kid in a Japanese internment camp in Colorado, was totally blind by the time he finished PhD, and despite all of this, spent life doing deep, big picture work at intersection of labor and IO. journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108…

I am not making a comparison. But it may be useful for young people. It was Proust who said it in "La recherche": he built this timeless work out of his wasted years, years of triviality and nothingness.
