Amazing how normal this stuff seems now. Country Garden is not Evergrande. As recently as mid-2021, CG's 2025 USD bonds had a yield of less than 4%. The scale of the collapse even relative to what was expected after the Three Red Lines were announced is astounding.

Our cover and special report this week is a brilliant survey of India's economy and its prospects by @arjun_ramani3 and Tom Easton, well worth your time. economist.com/special-report…
It might seem like a minor story outside of Scotland/the UK, but I feel like the collapse of the SNP/Green agreement is one of the best global examples so far of a govt dropping overly-ambitious climate targets despite being very ideologically committed. theguardian.com/politics/2024/…
This is a reminder too of the selectiveness of Chinese government territorial claims. The Qing actually held (outer) Mongolia for longer than Taiwan. The ROC even vetoed Mongolian UN membership and didn't recognise it until 2002!

Dreadful news. Still, I believe in Britain and I think with a concerted effort we can get this number down to 10 or 11.
Good piece here. China's property bubble, with all of it's excesses and absurdities, was on show for everyone to see. None of the vulnerabilities were hidden. The only thing that's come as a surprise is the govt's willingness (so far) to derail the train. wsj.com/real-estate/ch…

The Sharm el-Sheikh Summit of Peacemakers (1996). Not because of what it was, but because I had picked up the habit of saying "summat" for "something," which my parents were trying to get me to stop doing. I was incensed that Bill Clinton was allowed to say summat and I wasn't.

We all used to laugh at Evergrande's electric vehicle ambitions in 2018-2020, but honestly the expansion of the sector since then makes me think the Three Red Lines were all that stopped them being on the roads already.

@Birdyword Be the Britain that East Asia thinks you are (cultural giant) and that Russia/Iran think you are (malevolent superpower) and that continental Europe thinks you are (legendary boozers).
A thought I had about Brexit on my run this morning. The hope one might have naively had was that the UK, by being part of the EU, might help American businesses navigate European markets better. But, increasingly I get the sense that the European markets may be just as foreign…
An international collegiate debate tournaments, there are strict rules against using accents to judge for clarity mainly because people kept giving extra points to British accents even if they said something that made no sense.
I had a colleague, who will remain nameless, who said that she repeated anything an English person said back to herself in her head to decide whether it was actually clever, or just the accent.
Some reason reasons here 1. Singapore forces residents to save ~37% of their income for CPF which substitutes for pension spending. Ditto for healthcare where a combination of competition bw public hospitals and forced savings keeps health spending low
Singapore seems unique among wealthy industrialized countries in having a low share of government spending as a share of the GDP.
Short kings win again
First @nvidia DGX H200 in the world, hand-delivered to OpenAI and dedicated by Jensen "to advance AI, computing, and humanity":
@Birdyword Back home the only real time one heard a posh English accent was when mocking someone by repeating their words in the accent. As a result, the first time I met someone with a genuine posh accent I really struggled to take them seriously at first
@Birdyword @violazhouyi @restofworld I really want Buc-ees to open in Taiwan purely so we get the inverse of this article
Found a pretty devastating typo in the date at the top of the right-hand page here. Not really sure who to tell.
@sturmovikdragon This isn’t about monetary compensation, this is about “having able-bodied adults to perform labor while I am a retired non-laborer”. *Someone* has to be the productivity.
@Birdyword You were wrong because the 20s clearly started on January 1st 2022. The previous two years have been struck from the record except Jan and Feb 2020 which are part of the 2010s.
More evidence of deglobalization and supply chain diversification away from China :) Robin Xing/ MS: "First-quarter data showed China’s export volumes rose sharply by 14 per cent year on year, even as the price index of those exports fell 12 per cent."
@Birdyword Was half asleep staring at a use by date the other day that had April 2024 and thought “oh this is good for a whole year”
It's very annoying that YIMBY-Georgist housing types get purity tested for not supporting rent control/IZ/corporate landlord bands/etc enough. Dog, we think your policies are shit, purity testing us doesn't work if you don't actually explain why we're incorrect.
oh god, the one that i despised in sf was "TWILIO. ASK YOUR DEVELOPER" that being said i have a soft-spot for the classified ads in The Economist that are like "Seeking Minister of Finance for the Republic of Burundi"
Are there other examples of this outside of DC? Advertising where it's ostensibly public but actually directed at perhaps a dozen very important policymakers who might walk past it.
@Birdyword Westminster tube station is packed with this sort of stuff
@Birdyword I have always assumed that the Airbus adverts for their A400 military transport on here are not actually aimed at me.
