Itās a beautiful day and Iām driving with wide open windows blaring āDirty Work,ā Iām a fool to sing along at the top of my musically inept lungs, Iām 20 and cynical and horrified with myself but Iām 36 and cynical and Iāve gone an unacceptable amount of soft, ohhh yeah.
Sean Penn as Steven J. Lockjaw really, really works as the Brock Vond stand-in because his performance/the writing absolutely nails Vondās eccentricity. Heās an authoritarian prick and fascistic motherfucker but heās also goddamned WEIRD.
One of my favorite chapters so far in DeLilloās Underworld. I read this passage as an expression of insidious marketing vis-Ć -vis American folklore and good lord does it fuck.

An odd minor Vineland-in-OBAA reflection but damn if the outside of their home in Baktan Cross didnāt look pretty much EXACTLY how I pictured it.
PTA adapting/being inspired by Pynchon is the ultimate āgame recognize gameā scenario. I really would love to see someone else with a vision take on Pynchon but PTA has nailed it in two completely different ways and I love them both.
Not gonna tell you which one just yet but hot damn One Battle After Another has one of my all-time favorite needle drops. MAYBE two.
The Road is beautiful and menacing and beautiful and menacing and beautiful and menacing. The spirit of Vineland is a deep and steady hum in One Battle After Another. I missed so much, but this movie didnāt need it. The shit he added felt remarkably Pynchon-esque. More later!!
