I feel like so much of the world is in turmoil. I’ve been trying to avoid clicking links and videos filled with destruction and violence because I don’t need to consume tragedy to know it exists. You don’t have to consume tragedy to prove that you care.

If even as a creative exercise there’s an unwillingness to make space what hope is there beyond the walls of the theater? It’s an interesting thought and I wonder for those who participated how it impacted them after or didn’t. If you saw the play let’s talk about it!

It made me think about the broader implications. Over the last three years our country has descended into a moral quicksand. The inability to see and make space has increased a sense of helplessness, righteous anger and hateful rhetoric is costing citizens their very lives.

I laughed at the irony. I was reminded that time and again folks of color do and are expected to make literal space with often little to no reciprocity. That reality has always been one of the gifts of privilege and whiteness—the ability and sense of entitlement to take up space.

#Fairview prompted white members of the audience to consider what it meant to literally make space. Some accepted the challenge while others like the man beside me did not. There’s great irony in that. I had an extra ticket and donated it to the box office. He got the ticket.

For two hours the theater was a safe space. I reflected on what it meant to be seen. I remembered all of the lectures over my life of having to be “twice as good”—and that only in doing so could I maybe be seen and perhaps thrive.

You arrive expecting entertainment, perhaps a powerful performance and can leave moved or in a contemplative state. As I wrote, #Fairview required a mental and emotional unspooling long after the actors took their final bow.

I have been and remain intrigued by art in its many forms that beckons, and in the case of #Fairview compels the audience to move from spectator to participant. The willingness to engage sometimes requires leaving a comfort zone. But isn’t the power of art?
