Crikey!! 🙃 The average sea surface temperatures through 2024 were 6.8 standard deviations above average. For context, that has a return period of 1 in 216 billion. This is far beyond natural variation & would have been impossible without human activity changing the climate.

When it comes to mean daily maximum temperatures since 1st March in my local area, no other year in records back to 1943 comes even close to 2025. It's 1.0°C above the prior warmest, 2020. That's a vast margin when looking at means of 123-days.

It’s been a hot day across France today with 137 monthly records broken. 37°C was recorded in Beggar, the previous record was 34.7°C in 2001. The heat records just keep tumbling.

Every time the models update I check for signs of a change to bring something appreciably wetter by mid-May. For five days & counting, the answer has generally been ‘no’. Last night’s ECMWF det. run had no rain at all for a few spots through 18th, & just 1-2 mm widely.

I've only got daily sunshine data for my local area back to 2003 but still, it's clear that 2025 is something else for the combination of high sunshine & low rainfall so far this spring. Even sunnier than 2012 & considerably drier (that year turned rainy soon into April).
