As the ruins of the 7th century Whitby Abbey loom in the background, Tommy Tomalin captures A8 69861, bearing express headcode, & Thompson B1 61143 barking out of Whitby Town Sidings on a scenic excursion in June 1953. A round trip was made via Pickering & Scarborough then back.

Aside Jubilee 45684 Jutland on a train of vans, Princess Royal 46206 Princess Marie Louise is shot by the Reverend Arthur W. V. Mace resting momentarily at Rugby with the Mid-Day Scot in 1951. Putting the Jubilee to shame, its blue livery was a Crewe job from November 1950.

Preparing to depart from Blackpool Central while its headcode is fastened (it stayed slack the entire tour), Dreadnought 50455 is caught by E. Hunt at the head of the SLS/MLS York Excursion on 1st July 1951. Tuplin would record that 50455 was "was old & no longer able to hurry".

Headboard secured in a rather slap-dash manner, Kirtley R1 31671 is shot by T. B. Owen at Sheerness with the RCTS (London Branch) Invicta Special on 12th September 1954. The return leg would see the tour handed over to Maunsell D1 31505 at Faversham, which took it on to Kearsney.

I found an interesting file in the Archive on the Reading to Basingstoke line in steam days featuring locos from the WR, SR and LMR regions on various services. Here No 6953 Leighton Hall leaves Basingstoke on 28 April 1962 with 10.07am Southampton Terminus to Reading train.

After a spell as stationary boiler for Haymarket Shed, a moribund D11 62685 Malcolm Graeme was sent to Edinburgh Princes Street to supply steam heat for the Caledonian Hotel. Malcolm Graeme would remain there for a few months' time before a formal withdrawal came in January 1962.
