@Feeblemindx I'm struggling with that too, trying to make a simple sparring clip for a book trailing, nothing even close to this intense, and it can't do it right.
Had the fun of teaching a lot about Columbus recently, how ahead of his time he was as a navigator, about the Toscanelli Map (y'all know how I love my Cartography), his rivalry with the Pinta's captain, and the voyage that all the academics said was a pointless and futile suicide mission ... so "concensus" had about as much value in science then as it does now!
Observation from readings this week:
Amid the cancerous hatred of the Western Tradition that is Post-Modernism, there seems to be a quiet, yet bizarre counterpart arising on the other side: a sense of pointlessness in trying to fight for it, justified either by beliefs that it was "always" esoteric or non-Christian, and therefore there is nothing good left (especially of America), or that the decline of the West is somehow divinely prophesied. Though I've never been a believer in many academics' proposed bell-curves, it sure is odd how both extremes lead back toward a passive destruction of the Occidental Tradition. And in both cases, it's a rejection of the inheritance of the story of the West, coincidentally paralleling the rewriting the literal stories we tell our children into ones with inverted, Post-Modern values. Huh. It's almost as if it's deliberate...
All sexual romance fundamentally involve the transformation of “The Maiden” archetype into one of her ultimate forms.
1. “The Happy Ending” : Maiden becomes Matriarch (The Office, Eowyn/Arwen from LoTR)
2. “The Sad Ending”: Maiden becomes Crone (Titanic, first ten minutes of “Up”)
3. “The Tragic Ending”: Maiden becomes death (Romeo and Juliet, Ophelia from Hamlet)
The reason why Millennial woman can’t do romance is that they can never imagine transforming OUT of maidenhood. But it is the nature of maidenhood to TRANSFORM.
@GreeneMan6 Malfoid’s popularity seems to stem from the idea that she will eventually become wifejak, if the art I’ve seen of domestic Malfoid/Harry is any indication.
My absolute favorite Roger Scruton quote:
"A conservative is someone who has found something to love and wants to retain it, and to protect it from all the sources of decay. It is a philosophy of love."
The Audiobook for The Last Astronomer is now live! It's available on Audible and narrated by the talented Jim Gallagher. This is the completion of four formats for the novel, so the project is now complete. God willing, The Lone Cartographer will be finished by year's end, and a new round of publishing can begin!

“An honest man falls in love with an honest woman; he wishes, therefore to marry her, to be the father of her children, to secure her and himself. All systems of government should be tested by whether he can do this…”
—G.K. Chesterton
This is one of the greatest lines by Tolkien. Filled with profound wisdom and reality for our everyday lives. I think about it often.
“Yet it is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till. What weather they shall have is not ours to rule.”
"In post-modernity everything has the potential to become a symbol but nothing is a symbol of the transcendent. The pan-symbolism is purely immanent. Symbols, images, and myths interpret one another, interacting immanently, but none of them points beyond the symbolic realm. They do not symbolize a reality in which they participate." - Paul Avis: God & the Creative Imagination
When one thing interprets another in circular fashion (Dead Author Theory, anyone?), everything becomes likewise circuitously referential. Two ships at sea cannot navigate by using each other as a reference, because both move. They need a fixed and faraway point—a "star to steer her by." Without hearkening our eyes to the Transcendent, we become St. Peter upon the waves, hopelessly drowning without a Christ to look upon.
The old Western stories told us the real dragon to be slain was the darkness within ourselves, and every outside threat paled comparatively. The moment we said that the real monsters are the ones outside of ourselves was the moment everything turned upside-down, and the villain of everything became anyone but us, which is how the real dragons thrive.
Stories edify or degrade their inheritors. There is no weightless tale to the soul.
