Decent salaries should attract public servants with integrity, strong qualifications, relevant experience, a proven service record and the wisdom to put the nation first. That is the justification for paying well. #Singapore is an example of the rationale: competitive pay to attract capable people, alongside merit-based recruitment and high standards of integrity. We cannot justify Singapore-style salaries without demanding Singapore-style standards and accountability. But where do we see that in the #Maldives ? Too often, higher pay and greater power seem to bring more corruption, with little accountability. If those qualities are neither required for appointment nor reflected in performance, what exactly are we paying for?

Thinker Jean-Jacques Rousseau argued in The Social Contract that the people must retain authority over lawmaking; electing representatives cannot transfer sovereignty away from citizens. Political theorist Hélène Landemore questions a system that gives governing power to those best positioned to win elections. Winning votes does not necessarily demonstrate the knowledge, integrity or judgment needed to govern. She advocates citizens’ assemblies: ordinary people selected by lottery to reflect society, given time to study issues, question experts and deliberate. Her argument challenges the assumption that those who succeed in electoral politics are necessarily best suited to make decisions for everyone else. Why should electing an MP mean handing over our voice until the next election? A vote for a candidate is hardly agreement with every decision they will make. Yet party loyalty and political survival too often take priority over the public interest. Today’s technology gives us reason to rethink this concentration of power. Citizens should be able to propose laws, demand reviews of decisions and vote directly on major issues, with informed debate, transparent rules and protection for everyone’s rights. Accountability should be continuous. Citizens deserve a role in exercising power throughout a government’s term, beyond choosing who holds it on election day. #Maldives #Democracy #PartyPolitics #GoodGovernance

The irony is that the legal entities are also doing it illegally. Every one knows this. The authorities should also investigate licensed money changers. Having a licence does not automatically mean they are operating within the law. There are serious concerns that some licensed operators exchange foreign currency at rates beyond what their licences permit, while submitting records that show transactions at the approved rates. mihaaru.com

Maldives’ USD crisis requires one question first and foremost. Does the country earn enough USD to meet its legitimate USD demand? If the answer is YES, then we do not have a USD shortage. We have a distribution failure and a black market that is making a privileged few richer while making ordinary Maldivians poorer every day. Tourism earns its revenue from selling OUR beaches, OUR islands and OUR country, yet scarce USD should not become another commodity from which a small group can extract 30–40% premiums from Maldivians who need dollars for business, education, healthcare and everyday necessities. If legitimate supply can meet legitimate demand, Government should have the courage to reset the system: Close USD accounts across the board, individuals, businesses and the privileged alike. Convert balances transparently through the banking system into MVR, and require all foreign currency to flow through licensed banks. In return, banks must guarantee 100% of legitimate USD requirements for businesses and individuals who have the necessary MVR, imports, education, travel, healthcare and other genuine needs. At the same time, Government must aggressively plug illicit USD leakage and implement a time-bound plan to strengthen healthcare in Maldives so that dependence on Aasandha-funded overseas treatment can progressively be reduced. No privileged access. No parallel market. No one profiting simply because they control access to the nation’s foreign currency. If Maldives earns enough dollars, then every Maldivian should have fair access to those dollars through the banking system. The USD earned from our islands must serve our economy not enrich a privileged 1%. Period!

Rubio thinks his way or no way. Rubio thinks he is the only one with a brain, and that too is cunning to its core. Rubio thinks American interest is the only interest in the world, others don’t matter at all. Rubio thinks his broken moral compass is the only compasses. Rubio thinks he can whitewash every evil plan American implement, because the rest of world has no brain to think on their own.

“Water is no different in my opinion that it’s fellow element - fire. When used correctly, fire provides us warmth, the ability to cook, and just sitting around a fire can bring us joy. But it can also be deadly. It must be used appropriately and always respected, no matter how many fires you have built in your life. Being in any body of water, on the surface or beneath it is no different. There's no room for complacency or letting your guard down - ever. “ - Cheryl Patterson. Indian External Affairs Minister must be tired of updating his #Maldives contact list and deserves a loyalty card. Dr. Jaishankar has held the role since 2019. Stable counties build institutions. Unstable governments keep reshuffling misters and throwing away jobs at discounted rates. Meanwhile, in Singapore, Dr. Vivian has been Foreign Minister since 2015 and serving across 2 Prime Ministers. That’s what institutional stability looks like. Learn a thing or two from places you visit every other month.

A government isn’t a private company changing owners every 5 years. It’s a continuous set of instructions funded by the people. A country isn’t supposed to reset every 5 years. Policies, projects and national progress should continue beyond political terms. Same institutions. Same public money. Same responsibilities. “This government” vs “previous government” sounds more like a petty girls fight than governance. No administration should treat a 5 year mandate like an inheritance handed over to a completely new owner(s).

#Maldives governance update: if you blink, the ministry name changes. At this point it’s less policy, more seasonal rebranding. Maldives might be the only place where ministries change portfolios faster than people change profile pictures.

@Saharshaikfans That’s like asking if night is dark.

The irony is that none of these measures address the real driver of excessive costs; politically motivated hiring. What’s needed is a proper audit to identify excess staff and help redeploy them where they’re actually needed. mihaaru.com/business/156233

@sanchezcastejon This kind of moral consistency & willingness to call things as they are has become rare in much of the Western world today. This is a reminder that real leadership isn’t about convenient narratives, but about honesty, accountability & long term vision.

I struggle to understand how a so called “civilized” world act with such cruelty & impunity. It often feels like there are no real moral limits & that law & decency is just a facade. “The cruel and ruthless American & Zionists know no human or moral limits in their cruelty” - T
