Just remember that George would never let this happen… rolling in his grave watching his son tank this franchise
Hal Steinbrenner is the problem. And until he sells the Yankees, nothing will change. The rot begins at the top. The soft-spoken accountant running a cathedral like a regional bank. The man who inherited an empire built on ego, obsession, and fire, and turned it into a profitable real estate holding with a ballpark attached. He doesn't love baseball. He never did. And that's why the Yankees have become what they were never meant to be: ordinary. Yankee Stadium is now just a wine and cheese factory with a baseball field in the middle. The proof isn't subtle. It's printed in Inside the Empire. @BobKlap asked Hal Steinbrenner, point-blank, whether he loved baseball. And Hal, the inheritor of the most storied franchise in American sports, could not bring himself to answer. He hesitated, equivocated, and wandered through an explanation about "responsibility" and "the business of the game," before retreating to the familiar comforts of finance. It was the answer of a custodian, not a lover; a man who understood the value of his inheritance without quite comprehending its meaning. And the people in the upper deck understood the distinction immediately. Every Yankee fan in New York could hear what was missing. He isn't one of us. He doesn't burn. George appears to have had his doubts. The succession itself suggests as much. In his later years, control of the team was initially placed in the hands of his son-in-law, Steve Swindal, who seemed to possess something of George's drive, hunger, and fight. Then came the divorce, and the plan unraveled. The team passed to Hal, the Steinbrenner who had never seemed particularly eager to inherit it. And from that moment, the fire began to fade. Under Hal, the Yankees have become the picture of high-functioning mediocrity. A 90-plus-win machine that dies the same polite death every October. Eight postseason appearances in nine years. One pennant. Zero titles. Boone's been here nine seasons, the longest-tenured manager in Yankee history without a ring. Huggins, McCarthy, Stengel, Houk, Torre, Girardi all delivered glory. Boone delivers process. He survives because he mirrors Hal: polished, calm, unthreatening. It is management without accountability, mistaken for stability. The "baseball crapshoot" is an accountant's term for bullshit. The Yankees are outclassed every year. Even Derek Jeter couldn't take it. In his biography of Jeter, Tom Verducci chronicled a frustration that went beyond analytics or talent. The problem was one of attitude. Jeter understood what fans now feel: the absence of urgency. The edge was gone. Winning had given way to hoping, the language of ambition to the jargon of restraint. "Get in and give ourselves a chance," Hal likes to say, the mantra of a man seemingly determined to minimize disappointment rather than prevent defeat. Jeter was raised under George's law: losing meant rage, not rationalization. Under Hal, it means a cheap social media post "thanking" the fans. You can see it everywhere. Ninety-three wins, another early exit, and another press conference about how "anything can happen in October." Of course anything can happen. That is precisely why great organizations do everything in their power to improve the odds. Other franchises build teams capable of overcoming October's uncertainties. The Yankees invoke those uncertainties to explain their defeats. They talk about efficiency as though it were an achievement in itself. Efficiency is the virtue of the countinghouse, not the ballpark. The great Yankee teams played as if October owed them something. Hal's Yankees arrive like dinner guests hoping not to overstay. This is what happens when a man inherits a legacy he lacks the nerve to uphold. George saw the luxury tax as the price of winning. Hal treats it as a line that must never be crossed. His father feared losing. Hal fears spending. One gets the impression that he cares more about the balance sheet than the Bronx faithful. George Steinbrenner did not build the Yankees merely to make them a valuable business. He understood that the franchise's extraordinary commercial success was inseparable from its relentless pursuit of championships. He was often extravagant, occasionally unreasonable, and certainly not always right. But he never confused financial stability with sporting excellence. For George, finishing second was a failure. Under Hal, it is apparently sufficient grounds for congratulating himself on a job well done. The Yankees' problem is not simply bad luck or bad players. It is a failure of nerve, and no offseason rehabilitation program can cure an absence of ambition. The standards of an organization are ultimately set by the man who owns it. When he begins to regard disappointment as acceptable, complacency becomes institutional. Money can assemble a championship roster. It cannot purchase the conviction that anything less than a championship is unacceptable. As Jocko Willink says, it starts at the top. It always does. The Yankees don't lose because of analytics, or depth charts, or the bullpen. They lose because their owner treats greatness like an optional expense. They lose because their culture reflects a man who hesitated when asked the only question that ever mattered. History may remember Hal as the heir who preserved the value of his father's empire while diminishing the qualities that made it worth inheriting. The fans did not inherit George Steinbrenner's fortune. They inherited his expectations. Hal seems determined to disappoint both. The Bronx never asked for prudence. The stadium still gleams, the food is better, the fear is gone, and an institution once synonymous with supremacy has learned to congratulate itself for mere respectability. The Yankees were never meant to be efficient. They were meant to be the thing the rest of baseball measured itself against, and feared. And until the man in the owner's box remembers that, the Bronx will stay silent. Sell the team, buddy.
@TalkinYanks @TalkinJake can we get a link for the mock turtle?
Apple TV guy just said Austin Wells strikes out for a 3rd time….. in a surprised tone….. he always strikes out and we’re told he’s great at framing!!! When is going to be just OFF the team? It’s 8 v 9 every time he plays @TalkinYanks @RealMichaelKay
Defending is one thing. Pushing total bullshit is another.
"I still think he's very good. There's been a handful of plays that he hasn't made - and I'm talking four, five, six maybe - that for different reasons, last night's, that really ding that. I think if you watch him play every day, I think he's really good out there." - Aaron
Wells has 19 RBI in 270 AB… Volpe has 19 RBI in 171 AB… Stanton has 14 and he hasn’t played since April 27th. Rosario plays twice a month and has 28 RBI. Judge hasn’t played since the beginning of June and he has double the amount of RBI as Wells. But the Yankees didn’t need a catcher at the deadline…
It’s time to have some fairly uncomfortable conversations about George Lombard Jr.
@RealMichaelKay Volpe playing terrible and bullpen help because we gave up Lombard in a year before no MLB (lockout) and terrible AL might have made the @Yankees a finals team. Thats going all in!
It’s 8 vs. 9 with Wells as the catcher. @Yankees @TalkinYanks @RealMichaelKay
When The #Yankees lose tonight - do not blame Aaron Boone. Do not blame Cruz or Headrick. Blame Brian Cashman. Blame the guy who wasted yet another year of Cole and Judge. Blame the guy who did ZERO to fix a shitty catcher position - and thin bullpen. Blame him. I will.
@Yankees Austin Wells is the worst player in MLB.
@Yankees Lets be honest…Wells isnt a major league player. Speaks volumes about Yankee organization that they have no one better than Wells at catcher. Horrifying.
Thank god the Yankees didnt fucking upgrade at catcher at the deadline
@MissYankee Then just stop listening. Your choice
@notthefakeSVP on an @AmericanAir for my honeymoon….. half the plane boards….. then……”maintenance has been called” Everyone is off the plane 🙄
This is what I was trying to show yesterday
@eyyankees The @Yankees and the front office building him up to be the next Jeter is why the fan base is why the narrative got out of hand. If he wouldn’t have been sold as the golden boy, it’d be just another prospect who flamed out.
@RyanGarciaESM Volpe, 1st, please!!! 🙏🏽 @TalkinYanks
