Good news for Tesla’s Optimus According to The Paper(Chinese state media), Tesla’s robotics team has started factory audits at Chinese suppliers including Tuopu Group, Sanhua Intelligent Controls and Joyson Electronics. These companies supply key electromechanical components for Optimus, including joint modules, actuators and precision structural parts. More importantly, these are not just automotive suppliers being evaluated for a potential robotics project. Sources say they have already received Optimus orders, with the audits now focusing on production lines, quality and compliance before manufacturing begins. Elon previously said Tesla was rebuilding the Optimus supply chain from scratch. Now, Chinese suppliers that already have Optimus orders are being brought into Tesla’s manufacturing and quality system. That is another sign that Optimus mass production is moving closer. But We still haven’t seen Optimus V3

A robot that throws a baseball at 113 km/h 🥎 AthenaZero, from the @rai_inst, on the cover of Science Robotics this month. Effective mass at the wrist: 3.97 kg. The paper measures a Franka at 29.21 kg and a UR5e at 34.72 kg on the same terms. That's close to an order of magnitude, and it puts the arm in the range of a human one. Here's where it comes from. A conventional industrial arm runs gear ratios of 80:1 or higher, and a gearbox multiplies reflected inertia by the square of its ratio. You get a small motor and an arm that feels heavy to move. AthenaZero uses quasi-direct drive at roughly 5:1 on most joints, and remotises the transmissions so the heavy components sit proximal, near the torso, rather than out at the wrist. → One-DoF torso, two 7-DoF arms, two 6-DoF under-actuated hands. 22 actuators across 27 joints → 1.6 m tall, 1.8 m wingspan, payload above 3 kg → Throwing above 30 m/s, catching at over 14 m/s across 7.3 m → Batting with an 82% contact rate at 31 mph The effective mass analysis tooling is open under an MIT licence with datasets on Zenodo. Low effective mass is what lets an arm reverse direction at human cadence, absorb a contact instead of transmitting it, and stay safe beside a person. Every contact-rich task sits downstream of it. Throwing a baseball is just the most legible way to prove you have it.
