PepsiCo's CEO said the quiet part on last week's earnings call: "We're not competing well in soft drinks."
North American beverage volume fell 2% in the quarter, even as energy and hydration grew. The response is to put "all the urgency of the business" into soda: more investment behind Pepsi, Mountain Dew and the recently acquired Poppi, plus cost cuts and, in some cases, price increases.
The launch list shows the direction. Pepsi Strawberry Shortcake, Mountain Dew Berry Sol, Dirty Dawg Mug Root Beer, and Poppi Lift, an energy drink with 70 mg of caffeine, vitamin B3 and electrolytes, due in March.
For operators and suppliers, the signal is that the biggest beverage players are chasing flavour-led novelty and function at the same time, while pricing up where they can. Expect heavier promotional calendars and more SKU requests as they try to win back volume.
Sen. Warren asked the FTC and DOJ to scrutinize three pending food deals at once: Kroger–Giant Eagle ($1.65B), Sysco–Restaurant Depot and McCormick–Unilever food. Three channels, one theme. Consolidation is getting a harder look.

@Albertsons wants about $8B from @kroger over the dead 2022 merger, including a $600M break-up fee. Trial starts Oct 19 in Delaware. The question: did Kroger really try to get the deal past the FTC, or keep the best stores for itself?

B&G Foods called off the Green Giant Canada sale to Nortera after the Competition Bureau moved to block it. Nortera already dominates canned and frozen veg here. Buyers with category share should expect Canadian regulators to say no.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel just joined Proda, a sparkling soda with 10g of whey protein per 12 oz can. Circana says 48% of US adults are actively seeking more protein, up 7 points in a year.
Where does protein soda actually land?
For the first time, a majority of Americans say they have little or no confidence in the federal government to ensure food safety. Brands and retailers are carrying more of that trust on their own now. Recall readiness is a commercial asset, not just compliance.
Gallup: 65% of Americans are confident the food at most grocery stores is safe. It was 81% in 2019. First time it has fallen below 70%.

The Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce Cyclospora outbreak sickened more than 12,000 people. Per Numerator, 10% of households cut spending on salads and fresh greens, and more than a quarter stopped buying them altogether.
In a recent retail survey cited by Food Business News, 34% of consumers said they buy more ground meat or cheaper cuts, 31% switch to a less expensive protein, and 29% choose smaller pack sizes. Beef pounds still rose 1.4% in July, but the total meat department fell 0.7%.
USDA's 2027 projections tell the rest: beef per capita slips from 58.9 lbs to 58.7, pork edges up to 49.7, and chicken climbs to 107.3.
One detail worth noting for category managers: GLP-1 users are more likely than non-users to eat meat and poultry frequently, and they favour smaller, more frequent meals. That points to smaller packs and protein-forward formats, not a smaller meat case.
Beef isn't losing its place. It's being traded down within the department, and pack architecture is where the margin gets decided.

Ahold Delhaize took systems offline Monday after a security issue. All five US banner sites went dark (Hannaford, Stop & Shop, Giant Food, Food Lion, The Giant Company), plus Albert Heijn, Etos and Gall & Gall in the Netherlands.

Stores stayed open. The company gave no timeline for restoring systems and didn't say whether in-store operations were affected. This follows a late 2024 incident that potentially exposed sensitive information of more than 2 million people.
Supplier takeaway (my view, not the article's): a retailer outage is a supply chain question before it's an IT question. Do you know how your orders, EDI and promo data move if a banner's network goes down? If not, ask your buyer before you need the answer.
Stride Consumer Partners just took a majority stake in Clio Snacks, the Greek yogurt bar maker that went from about $9M in 2019 to an estimated $60M in 2024. Same PE firm that backed Yasso before Unilever bought it. Read the playbook.
