Bad Apples: film journalists will call this a dark comedy, and they’ll be doing the public a disservice in using such a broad descriptor. This film is zany thriller, a genre bending horror, and an incisive social commentary unfolding over a 100 minute crash out. See this! #TIFF50

Couture: This film had a lot of ideas, none of which were explored in depth or given any real time to unfold. There’s a meta narrative with one of the characters that’s undercooked and is kinda lazy storytelling. Disjointed and lacking. Sorry Angelina! Your French is ok! #TIFF50

The Christophers: FINALLY a tight 90! Signature slick Soderbergh. Ian McKellan plays the quintessential cantankerous old sod, with Michaela Coel as his foil. J**** C***** mercifully has very little screen time, leaving all the real acting to the professionals #TIFF50

Kokuho: Kabuki as extreme sport, with added dynastic conflict and betrayal. Reminded me of Tár in its intense focus on a virtuosic talent and their undoing. A masterpiece, but it’s also long AF and probably should’ve been a mini series #TIFF50

No Other Choice: Another PCW classic, and a welcome addition to the “capitalism is literally killing us” genre. His use of visual metaphor along with sound design is always so strong. Son Ye-jin and Lee Byung-hun are stellar #TIFF50

Orphan: László Nemes is the master of vibes when it comes to period pieces, but this one needed a bit of fine tuning. Certainly an interesting watch in the broader context of current Hungarian politics. Mátyás Erdély is the greatest working cinematographer we have #TIFF50

Three Goodbyes: a poetic and tender meditation on finding joy when maybe you’d rather crash out instead. At times veers towards schmaltz, but is ultimately anchored by Alba Rohrwacher’s deeply affecting performance. Could maybe use a bit more editing #TIFF50

The Secret Agent: engaging, thoughtful, and FUN. A film about a difficult time in Brazil’s history that asks how collective memory shapes the past and informs the present. Not exaggerating when I say I would die for Dona Sebastiana, who absolutely steals the show.

Sirāt: If Gaspar Noé directed Mad Max (complimentary). This film left me speechless. About half way through my soul left my body and I fear it may never return. Incredible sound design that utterly disorients you. Not sure I enjoyed it, but def worth seeing in a theatre! #TIFF50

Wasteman: an extremely dialled in two-hander thriller anchored by stellar performances by David Johnsson and Tom Blyth. McMau’s dynamic visual style works so well to build tension. This movie literally gave me a tummy ache, it was that suspenseful! #TIFF50

Erupcja: During the Q&A Pete Ohs talked about shooting on a 5D and my first thought was yeah I can tell. Clunky editing and amateurish cinematography. Script needed tightening. It’s giving student film and not quite in a charming way. Charli xcx is good, though! ⭐️⭐️1/2 #TIFF50
