@jbadams @Quasilocal @rhelune Nope, Steve is just bizarre, I've never seen anyone do this before and never noticed Steve did it.

@colwight @LKrauss1 It increases the probability of fraud or other bad practice. Not necessarily the most significant factor though.

@resonant_theory @tdj11100 @KMoshakov Like it's a very visceral demonstration of the impact that fundamental research can have. A terrifying impact in this case, but one can be optimistic and believe that such research can also have great positive impacts.

@resonant_theory @tdj11100 @KMoshakov I haven't seen the movie yet, but I would assume it's more the aspect of discovering new things about the fundamental nature of reality. That's pretty inspiring, even if sometimes that knowledge bestows terrible new powers unto mankind.

@maddoxrules Like there are a lot of variables here, I don't see why the existence of suckage now should require that a globally better time in the past can be identified. Maybe I misunderstand you but the sentiment doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

@maddoxrules Depends what "things" you mean. Everything? Certainly not. Some things used to be much better though (e.g. house prices relative to median income), while sure, other things used to be much worse. People have every right and reason to complain about things that suck now though.

@Quasilocal Well yeah but the hard part is to optimise present vs integrated future happiness.

@WKCosmo Telling them to just enjoy their twenties does indeed come off a little deaf to their fears and problems.

@WKCosmo I think he's just acknowledging the young people have real and very serious fears regarding their futures, even more than previous generations. Worsening global economy, diminishing chances of ever owning property, continuously degrading climate and environment, etc.

@Veritatem2021 @doug_lakey @umairh Why would it not go up? Population increases, inflation, etc. Seems expected.

@Animal10point0 @GreggDCaruso Well it's kind of just his diary, notes to self etc. Not so much a book. Wikipedia claims it's unlikely he intended for it to be published.

@ulrichatz @rlmcelreath Presumably they are computed using some asymptotic approximation or some such, and this plot is demonstrating that the asymptotic conditions etc are failing in this case. So yeah they aren't the "right" p-values on the x axis.

@cathleen28 @kentonagbone @LauraMiers That might be a concern if people could afford to own property in the first place. That's rapidly becoming impossible though.

@antonoriza @jasonleowsg @codevagabond There is another problem though. Wealth doesn't just give you "more throws", it gives you safety nets along the way. One small mishap or period of poor market conditions can destroy a new small business, but people with money can take the loss for much longer and ride it out.

@felicity_acab @monicaiceland @luckytran @AstroKatie @JeremyFarrar We did do a bad job on this one, but to be fair it is the most infectious, most easily transmitted disease in history (so far...). Nevertheless we do need to get much better or else we might have found the solution to the Fermi paradox.

@TiborDzurnak @svpino @building_brocks Yeah I'm a little confused, 600/day seems like an awful lot? I'm fairly sure I don't see anywhere near that many. I guess I don't spend all that much time on Twitter though...

@MomOfEverybody @jakobpunkt @luckytran @AstroKatie @JeremyFarrar That said I'm sure many policies and funding streams etc have changed greatly as a result of COVID. Whether they have changed enough or in the right ways though, well that's different.

@MomOfEverybody @jakobpunkt @luckytran @AstroKatie @JeremyFarrar They're saying plenty to warrant action, governments are just bad at spending money on long-term things like this.
