Toronto hospitals drop mask mandates but HCW’s will mask if asked & patients masking will be respected. The fact that they have to state it will be respected makes it sound as though masking is doing something wrong. Imbalance of power makes it hard to ask reluctant HCW’s to mask
I was sent home from ER three times with a life threatening internal bleed… my hemoglobin was 60. This poor man’s was 40. Why was he not immediately scoped to find & stop the bleed? Stories like this break my heart because I nearly died alone from delayed care for same issue.

Question re H5N1. We keep hearing that you can’t get sick from eating infected meat/dairy…. But I assume part of that is due to assumption that our stomach acid will kill remannts. What about those on huge doses of antacids? Or with immune system issues? Is their risk higher?
@raghu_venugopal we did that at the Cross Cancer centre in Edmonton and promptly had an outbreak. HC facilities have an obligation to be safe spaces for their vulnerable patients. Asymptomatic airborne spread means we need to do universal HCW masking until there isn't covid in the community.

Shows how little we care about those people no longer contributing economically. The elderly, disabled and children left without adequate protections for majority of the pandemic. How many times are they going to drop masks only to end up on outbreak? Clearly the masks work!

Disabled people are not ok. The pandemic has turned society against us (even more than before). People were quietly ableist before. Now they’re openly hateful. It was hard to access healthcare before. Now it’s impossible. It was lonely before. Now it’s a pit of despair /1 🧵
absolutely not disagreeing with you @broadwaybabyto - just adding that growing up “invisibly” disabled eg autistic in Toronto in the 1990s was very much like now it’s extremely triggering tbh. the constant if you can’t be normal then go die. I’m so tired, we all are💚🫂
It didn’t used to be like this. Ableism has always existed - but it was never as aggressively in your face as it is now. People are experiencing trauma from Covid… and rather than cope with it they seem to be lashing out at disabled individuals. /6
@broadwaybabyto JFC. My wife was diagnosed stage 4 with ovarian cancer. Her only symptoms were a slight bloated feeling. She died two years later. Be assertive because you are your own best advocate ❤️
@broadwaybabyto And it doesn't address the needs at all of patients who are incapacitated, and can't request that. Or children. Or non-verbal. Or not highly proficient in the language of care delivery. And why are patients expected to have to ASK for what they deem appropriate medical care?
@broadwaybabyto since it is AIRBORNE, they have been breathing OUT virus for their entire shift, asking them to mask helps a little bit with source control but not as much as 100% masking all the time on shift

@broadwaybabyto Health is becoming like a "low cost" airline that charges separately for everything. Like having seat belts and overhead oxygen as extras you pay for on request! (Some already charge extra for toilet access. Most charge for food and luggage). Ugh!
How did the whole country become like Florida? They stopped reporting accurate death rates in 2021. All of those relatively healthy grandmas passing away exactly the same time? I knew Florida was hiding numbers but didn’t realize the other states were as ashamed as FL. Hmmm.

@broadwaybabyto In the UK, we now have Tory MPs regularly coming onto news shows saying how much disabled people are costing the country. This kind of talk is dangerous as it starts to make people think that disabled people are a burden - and it's not a million miles from this:
