'A Journey in Service'? From Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida? Another reminder that Nigeria is a tragicomedy. A vainglorious distortion of history, otherwise it should have been titled 'A Journey in Disservice'. IBB can hardly have a superior in the roll call of Nigeria's most horrendous leaders. He was far more than the man who truncated Nigeria's freest and fairest election or the ruler under whose watch Dele Giwa, one of Nigeria's finest journalists, was parcel-bomb-assassinated. Babangida was also a terror who hunted journalists like petty thieves and common criminals. Many journalists ended up in jail, some in exile, some in lifelessness, some in joblessness and others in guerilla practice, having to sneak out in daylight and nightimes for editorial meetings that were convened in some of the most unthinkable places, including garages. Apart from the newspapers he shut down (TheGuardian, Punch, Vanguard, Concord etc), others went out of business as advertisers seeking to not irk the government avoided them like plagues. IBB's ruthlessness extended to rights defenders and even students, many of whom were repeatedly arrested and incarcerated, and for lengthy periods. The Evil Genius excelled in everything anti-public interest. His economic policies backfired spectacularly, and he was as corrupt as the rest of them. Had the public not violently protested his annulment of the 1993 election, Babangida would have turned out another Paul Biya (Cameroon president from 1982 till date). Many Nigerians lost their lives in the protests that ousted Babangida from power; do not piss on their graves by entertaining any conversation about IBB's 'service'. I hope that while he is still alive, IBB still has just one person in his circle who can remind him his was a life in disservice to Nigeria, or at best 'A Journey in Self-Service'!

In July 2014, while Lagos bustled with its usual chaos in the sweltering heat, a storm was brewing unknown to its lively residents. It wasn’t a storm of traffic jams or fuel scarcity; this was deadlier. A man had arrived in Lagos via air travel, sweating and feverish. He even collapsed at the airport but nobody suspected what he was carrying with him in his body. His name? Patrick Sawyer. His condition? Highly contagious. His disease? Ebola. The world had been watching Ebola ravage West Africa, but Nigeria had yet to record a single case. That was about to change. But there was no protocol. No preparation. And in a city of over 21 million people, even one mistake could mean disaster. But one doctor stood between Nigeria and an epidemic. Dr. Stella Adadevoh. Here’s the story of how a Nigerian doctor stopped Ebola from spreading to potentially kill thousands but paid the ultimate price. 🧵 👇🏾

When will this police brutality and all end in this country ??

Do you remember when you joined X? I do! #MyXAnniversary

I have been struggling within me for over a week now, not to put this out (maybe cos I’ve been lazy to type), but I believe God wants me to share it for someone here. So in October 2023, shortly after my Masters in the UK, I decided I was going to go back to Nigeria,

@DrJoeAbah HBD @DrJoeAbah . May lines continue to fall for you in pleasant places. More blessed years ahead in good health and wealth.

@therealbelano Hallossss. Been a while. Regards to your family.

@renoomokri Until danfo drivers send you to great beyond. Ride bicycle on Nigerian road at your own risk.

Good Governance 101: Here's one way you can get in-volved and put your powers to good use. #GentlemanOfThePress

PIDOM was visited today: —His health condition has WORSENED especially his bodily injuries —He looks very BONY, SICK and WEAK —His IPO has neglected him and REFUSED hospital visits despite repeated scheduling —He is completely ISOLATED from other inmates and they’ve been warned neither to communicate nor help him in any way This is EVIL. FREE PIDOM NOW!

Dear young Nigerian, Add more to what you already know. Understand what you don't know. Seek to improve your knowledge and understanding of new things to remain relevant now and beyond. Keep learning, relearning and unlearning. Be knowledgeable. Be transformed from within.

Today makes it a week since @PoliceNG confirmed that they have @PIDOMNIGERIA in their custody. They promised to arraign him in court this week, but today is Friday and there is no sign of any such arraignment. He is still being held incommunicado. Where is he? #FreePIDOMNow

If you were not born into wealth, If you never inherited huge money, If you never won millions from a lottery, If you are not into entertainment, If you are not into high paying tech, If you are not an elite sportsperson, If your parents are not rich and you are from an average/struggling family in Nigeria before you travelled abroad; Chasing generational wealth as a primary priority being a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, whose family back home is not wealthy, is very unrealistic. Let me explain. If you left Nigeria as the first person in your family to escape that economic hellhole, what we call japa, we are actually economic refugees. You will most likely be working in an average salary job that won’t pay too much money after tax deductions. You will have many monthly bills to pay (rent, light/energy, WiFi, internet, phone, water, council, transport/car loan, food, etc); and many times, you may also have school fees debt to repay, you may have your parents to support and your siblings to fund. So if what I just described is your reality, and it is infact the reality for many of us immigrants, please how is generational wealth your primary priority? How can it be? The average person in the uk working full time will make £1,500-£2,500 monthly after tax. By the time you pay all the bills I listed above and try to send something home, again I ask you, where is this fantasy of “generational wealth” going to come from? Don’t get me wrong: It’s okay to want generational wealth for your children and your children’s children after them. But what I am saying is that, you may not be the wealthy one now, but you can kickstart the process that two or three generations down the line, will be wealthy. But don’t get obsessed trying to be wealthy and feel like a failure when you don’t. Find consolation in knowing you have made a decision that puts your children in a far better starting point in life than your own parents did for you. Let me tell you a story: There was an Indian man who migrated from Pakistan to Kenya in 1937. He had a son who migrated to the uk, studied medicine, met and married an Indian woman pharmacist in uk who also migrated to uk from Tanzania. His son, the doctor in uk, made huge sacrifices to send his own son (the man’s grandson) to oxford university. The grandson graduated first class. Many years down the line, in 2022, that Indian man’s grandson became the British first ever Asian prime minister. This is the true life story of the last uk prime minister Rishi Sunak. Nobody knows his father or his grandfather. But it was their hard-work, sacrifices, courage to always seek a better life even if it meant making the tough choice to travel to a new country; this is what eventually resulted in the generational success that Rishi Sunak is today. I think a lot of us Nigerians tend to worry about the wrong thing at the wrong time. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. The idea of “building wealth” from a place of average earnings is an unrealistic notion that will only cause personal disappointment and innate resentment at oneself- even though you are absolutely doing well for yourself. The obsession of comparison with others - who you don’t know what families they are from and what work they actually do- can make you lose sight of how far you have come in your own journey and how much you have accomplished in your own story. Your journey. Your story. Your success. This is what matters. This is what is important. Not what someone else, or anybody else, thinks about it. You know yourself. You know your journey. You know your story. Be proud of how far you’ve come. Don’t ever allow anybody make you feel like a nobody in your own story, a story where you have successfully made yourself something out of almost nothing. Remember: Life is in phases and in stages. And as long as your today is better than your yesterday, you are still in the game, you can still win and your story is not over yet.
