@benjaminfelix @AravindSitham I’m forgetting if you looked at this so I’d need to go back and read it again, but the tax in could be way lower than tax out if the business owner keeps the money in their Holdco to invest vs. Paying it out as a div and paying that tax then investing.

@benjaminfelix @AravindSitham I read your article comparing salary to dividend for business owners. I came away confused after seeing the low 2.1% IRR. Does this IRR take into account the tax credits etc. of paying into CPP?

@benjaminfelix @AravindSitham The article made it sound like the slam dunk I thought it would be so when I got to the part about the 2.1% IRR, I was questioning was such an obvious choice, but knowing the 2.1 is real makes a difference. Your points about deferral bonuses and longer life expectancy are good.

@AaronHectorCFP At least if you own a business you can split some by paying a salary to a spouse. I’m not sure the logic for why DB pension can be split anytime but income from registered accounts can’t be split until age 65

@TheTaxHeroes The “30 day before” part can trip people up, but it only affects the % of units purchased within that 30 day window. I.e. if 5% of the position being sold was purchased within 30 days, the superficial loss rules only apply to 5% of the sale proceeds.

10) If you’re a Canadian holding US company shares at a US brokerage and the stock pays a dividend, don’t expect a T-slip for those dividends. You’re expected to track and report these dividends yourself.
