National Insurance was introduced as a form of insurance against illness and unemployment. It evolved to become a funder of the NHS and the State Pension. Reportedly, Jeremy Hunt wants to abolish National Insurance. Which should tell you all you need to know.
@carryonkeith Heaven forbid people keep more of their own money that they've earned...
@carryonkeith Don’t jump to silly conclusions. NI has become a tax on jobs. The Chancellor has chosen to cut that rather than income tax. The NHS will never be abolished. What will happen is more procedures will be contracted out to the private sector. Still free at the point of need! Good!
@carryonkeith @GirlCatio Successive governments have treated the NI payments as a general tax and have conveniently forgotten what it was intended to be used for. I wonder how much NI brings into the Treasury each year and how much is actually paid out in Pensions and Healthcare.
@carryonkeith While people like insurance salesman Arron Banks, remember him from Brexit? Hover around looking to cash in on the need for private health insurance. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
@carryonkeith National Insurance has not done that for years. There is no State Pension Pot or insurance scheme. It all comes out of general taxation. It’s not honest to pretend NI does what it says on the tin. It should be abolished and merged into PAYE.
@carryonkeith George Osbourne was the Chancellor of the Exchequer when the Pensions Act 2014 designated the UK State Pension to be a Benefit rather an insurance based pension.
@carryonkeith Yes we should have a system more like France, Germany and many others. Part public, part private.
@carryonkeith It's gone into the general tax pot for ages; its second taxation of income. Beveridge thought that all services should be contributory, that is where National Insurance came from. It's not been that for years Why do the left lie with impunity. #bbcnews #bbcbreakfast #r4today
