In retrospect, it should have been obvious that Mike was no prophet. No one rides through heaven in a golden chariot. No one wakes to find an angel at their bedside. To paraphrase the Talmud, nowadays God only speaks through books and scholars.
People are grieved and anguished to have given decades of their lives to a ministry that preached holiness while being a secret cauldron of spiritual and sexual abuse. Mike once called my college prayer group “wholly given over to Satan,” but he was projecting.
How have the current and former IHOPKC communities reacted to these revelations? The last couple months have seen a mass exodus from the church, which is rumored to be heavily in debt. The prayer room may soon have to close or cease operating 24/7.
Last week the Roys Report revealed that Julie was being blackmailed by a fellow worship leader, who had secretly recorded Julie confessing to a long-term affair. Julie wouldn’t name the second party in the affair, but said he’s a “very well known guy” who thinks he’s King David.
It’s impossible to overstate the esteem in which Julie was held at IHOPKC. She was arguably more beloved than Mike or Allen. She was rumored to have taken a vow of celibacy, which inspired numerous young women in the church to take vows of celibacy.
Now let’s talk about Julie*. Julie was the head worship leader and probably the most famous person at IHOPKC. Five of her albums have placed on the Billboard charts. (I’m not using her real name because she’s a friend and I consider her a victim.)
It was this second interview that torched what remained of Mike’s legacy and reputation. Eight prominent Charismatic leaders issued a statement declaring him “unfit for ministry.” Boz Tchividjian, grandson of Billy Graham and victims advocate, called for IHOPKC to close.
According to Tammy, Mike confronted her in private and asked if she had feelings for him—then confessed that he liked her, too. She began calling him on a payphone at school. When they were alone in the house, he kissed her “the way a man kisses a woman.”
