Classic red flag question i get surprisingly often is “which energy technology are you *most* bullish on.” 😐 Energy needs are highly locationally variant… so the optimum technology varies with that. v simple example: a 500MW solar site, far from any industrial centre, deep in a valley in Scotland just isn’t a great investment decision (as much as I do love solar). Similarly, a very small, super inefficient gas peaker that happens to be in a highly supply-constrained area can be worth more than its weight in gold. In order to get energy bills down we need to think holistically about requirements + constraints - not fall victim to the dogmatic politicising that has been holding back progress.

Incentivising 'young people' to go ~40x leveraged into an asset class with flat/negative real returns doesn't strike me as the 'good growth in every postcode' we were promised... 😬

@raghav2956 I think we were ~10 imo you should have a strong enough network at founding to fill up a small office, then bring on a recruiter.

Most founders I speak to completely underestimate the value of a great recruiter. The binding constraint on your ambition will always be the number of exceptional individuals you have. Top recruiters can systematically identify them while maintaining a low false positive rate.... it's why @fuseenergy we have 40 of them 😎

The narrative that the UK power grid is physically constrained is true, but incomplete. The @fuseenergy development team have found >500MW sitting available today with 0 engineering work needed to connect (using our grid models 😎). Capacity is there, it's just blocked by bureaucracy. The government should stop spending time finding funky new acronyms to call their departments, and instead focus on unlocking the potential that already exists in our infrastructure.

Last night we hosted Abundance: Building the UK Energy System at our new office - an evening of conversations with the people who shape policy, on the challenges that will define UK energy over the next decade. We were honest about the problems. Energy costs are too high. Demand is about to surge as AI and electrification take off. And growth is slow because Britain can't build fast enough: grid connections take years, planning decisions drift past their deadlines, and plug-in batteries that could cut household bills sit behind a safety study, with rules not expected before 2028. But the message of the evening was optimism. Every one of these barriers is fixable - and we're ready to work with government to get it done.
