i think product naming deserves more strategic attention
a name can tell you:
what it is
who it’s for
when to use it
what outcome to expect
or absolutely nothing
sometimes mystery creates brand value
sometimes it just creates another comprehension problem
there’s a concept called opportunity cost
every yes spends something
money, time, attention, shelf space, inventory, engineering hours, creative capacity
strategy gets much clearer when you ask what choosing this prevents you from choosing instead
one reason comparison ads work:
evaluation is hard when attributes live in isolation
“we weigh 280g” requires knowledge
“ours 280g, theirs 410g” creates meaning instantly
comparison converts facts into judgments
i was thinking about running shoes and realized how powerful “rotation” is as a category idea
once a runner believes different shoes serve different runs, the category expands from “which pair should i own?” to “which pairs belong in my rotation?”
education can increase the number of valid purchase occasions
a strong static ad should have a clear job
some creatives build problem awareness
some make the desired outcome feel more tangible
some use urgency or scarcity to push action
some explain the mechanism or make the product easier to understand
and some simply interrupt the feed with a visual that earns the next second of attention
the important part is that every concept is built around a different hypothesis
different static, different angle, different reason to care
that’s how static testing becomes strategy instead of just design
i think “why now?” deserves its own section in more creative briefs
the customer may understand the problem
want the solution
trust the product
and still decide next month is fine
timing is its own objection
one thing i’d test more with high-consideration products:
creative that helps the customer explain the purchase to someone else
expensive purchases often have a second audience
partner, boss, parent, team, finance department
sometimes the buyer needs ammunition for a conversation you’ll never hear
apple stores let you touch nearly everything
that matters
touching changes a product from an abstract object behind glass into something you can begin imagining as yours
retail can move customers forward simply by reducing the psychological distance to ownership
the mere exposure effect is fascinating because familiarity can increase liking
but repeated exposure can also create boredom
so frequency has this weird curve where repetition can first help and later hurt
the useful question isn’t “is repetition good?”
it’s where this audience currently sits on that curve
a really good headline often removes a category of reader
“for marathoners training through winter”
some people instantly leave
the right people instantly lean in
clarity can improve an ad by making it less universally relevant
one underrated source of creative ideas:
customer mistakes
how do people use the product incorrectly?
what do they misunderstand?
what do they forget?
what assumption causes disappointment?
education built around real mistakes tends to feel useful because it solves an existing behavior
