All you have to do is commit for 6 months.
That's not a lot. It's actually very little.
6 months is 1% of 50 years, and most people can't stick to something that will change the trajectory of their life for 2 weeks.
The problem is that most of us aren’t comfortable thinking like this; Building-to-think inevitably exposes you to the possibility of failure and most of us would prefer to avoid the humiliation altogether.
Most of the successful people I know naturally gravitate towards this idea of building-to-think. They tend to have a bias towards taking action and have a healthy disdain for spending too much time planning or forecasting.
They much rather f*ck around and find out.
@triketora I was on the Docs team 15 years ago. The rewrite (from Writely to the new OT-based editor) had just launched. We were facing an enormous list of features we lacked that prevented enterprises (and some consumers) from using us. I think we didn't even have inherited text styles at
Ideas are bottlenecked by our limited working memory, we can only think ±7 or so thoughts at anyone time. That usually isn’t enough to think through a new idea; to fully process it, we need to write it down, draw it, or better yet, build it.
Ideas are cheap exactly because anyone can have them, it’s the building that is hard.
Few people bother to go as far as building-to-think. They get stuck on the sidelines, their ideas stuck half formed inside their heads.
I’ve become obsessed with this idea of Building to Think.
You need to make ideas real before you can truely understand them. We can only really think when we take an idea out of our heads and realise it somehow.
It is this act of externalising that makes ideas real.
