last night, spent forever with friends debating whether a physical system can ever be conscious. dualists argue computation alone cannot produce consciousness. critics think we may be giving ourselves way too much credit by attributing experience to things simply because they look, seem, and behave like us. in the paper, Holyoak and Monti conclude that to answer this evergreen question, we must first clarify what makes a human conscious, then move towards calibrating cross-species analogies. Finally, take note of what would count as evidence for AI consciousness and look to identify alternative routes and emerging systems. where do you set your "consciousness goalposts"? arxiv.org/abs/2610.01002

it’s all coming back to the basics, what is a human? featherless biped was rejected. now, an entity that can learn is rejected. I can argue, an entity that *feels* is no longer unique either. biologically, of course, we are different. but… in an age where functionalism governs thought, doesn’t matter??

a question.. what experiences more emotion? plants? or LLMs? Emotus Plantarum differs from human emotion based on the argument that plants don't psychologically/consciously experience pain. they don't have a brain/CNS. but they still react to it, learn from it, etc. if LLMs have "pain vectors", if they do learn about your biases/attitudes/tasks/purposes, even if they're not changing their own weights on the go, they are also reacting and learning to those emotions (in-context-learning -> Functionalism). do LLMs exhibit Emotus Plantarum? LLMs can react to human emotions through text, so are LLM emotions more than "just" Emotus Plantarum?

people love arguing that free will does not exist, that all our actions and results of previous experiences. sounds like we are next token machines ourselves too, then, huh.
