yes it's absurd because it should start in kindergarten and everybody should have at least two under their belt by the time they graduate high school, and should have a working knowledge of Spanish no matter what

you are allowed to be a barbarian once you leave school but we do have a social obligation to try to induct our children into civilization. most people in the world are not monoglots
@dwaldenwrites we hugely underestimate how much learning a language helps us understand our own. this is how we get undergrads who don't know what adverbs are!
