Note: California’s regulations around the design, operation, maintenance and closure of landfills are some of the strongest around, so the public health risks are lower. But they will never be zero.

That is why all efforts to deal with packaging, and waste in general, need to start with reducing production and consumption of these materials. Here’s hoping that California’s efforts have a knock-on effect for the rest of the world.

On a day of bad climate news, some good: CA Leg passed #SB54, the strongest #plasticpollution legislation in the nation, through the incredible work of @JenniferFearing, @Tinaandolina, @sanborn_heidi and others, with the leadership of @BenAllenCA. On to the governor's desk.

W/minor tweaks that @BenAllenCA has agreed to address, this bill should be truly transformational." #SB54

The plastics industry has given us every reason to be skeptical of feel-good, voluntary commitments. As California seeks to lead on fighting the plastic pollution crisis, it must put in place strict requirements, strong oversight and narrow guardrails.

Canada took a decent step today, committing to ban some single-use plastics by next year. Plastic bags, straws, cutlery, it is a good start. But what about packaging? We need comprehensive solutions, not piecemeal efforts.

Plastic in freshly fallen snow. In Antarctica. Researchers from New Zealand took 19 samples of fresh snow in one of the most remote places on earth, and every sample had plastic. Time for California to lead again on protecting our planet.
