1. See patient in acute pain 2. Prescribe pain medicine so they can avoid the ER 3. Patient goes to pharmacy, is told that pain medicine requires prior authorization by insurer (who gave no forewarning of such and will not reopen til next day) 4. Patient ends up in ER anyway

Questions to quickly assess functional status in a family meeting. - When was the last time s/he was able to xxx? xxx could be - walk on his/her own - eat well - communicate in a meaningful way Check the functional status first, before talking medical condition.
