I am deeply appalled and angry to see “Firework” used on the @WhiteHouse TikTok account as a backing track for video footage of military strikes. I did not approve this, I was not asked, and I absolutely do not condone it. I wrote this song to be an anthem of hope, healing, and inner strength for people going through their darkest personal moments. To see a message of self-worth and upliftment weaponized to soundtrack destruction and violence is a complete violation of everything my song stands for. My music is for bringing people together, not celebrating warfare.

March 11, 2011. 2:46 PM. 33 Shinkansen bullet trains were running through northern Japan. Several were moving at 300 km/h. Then the earthquake hit. Magnitude 9.1. The 4th largest ever recorded. Epicenter: off the Sanriku coast, 130 km ESE of the Oshika Peninsula. Every single train stopped safely. Zero passenger injuries. Here's what happened. 12 to 22 seconds before the violent shaking reached the tracks, a seismometer on Kinkazan — a small island off Japan's Pacific coast — detected the quake and sent a signal inland. The signal traveled faster than the earthquake itself. Power to the tracks was cut. Every train in the zone automatically braked. By the time the ground started shaking violently, the trains were already slowing down. One empty test train derailed at Sendai Station. Not a single train in service derailed. The Shinkansen has been running since 1964. In 60 years, it has killed zero passengers — not in a collision, not in a derailment. Zero. Most people stop reading here. The real story starts now. Japan built this safety system in two layers, for two different problems. First: UrEDAS — the Urgent Earthquake Detection and Alarm System. Invented in the early 1980s, deployed on the Tokaido Shinkansen in 1992. The world's first operational P-wave warning system for trains. Its seismometers sit along the coast, listening for earthquakes out at sea. When one hits, the system reads the first 3 seconds of P-wave motion, estimates the magnitude and location, and sends a warning inland to the tracks. Second: Compact UrEDAS. Built after the 1995 Kobe earthquake, which struck directly beneath a city with almost no warning. When the earthquake happens directly under the train, there's no time to calculate anything. So Compact UrEDAS asks one question: "Is this shaking dangerous?" It answers in about 1 second. Both systems end the same way. They cut the power. The Shinkansen is built so that the moment it loses power, emergency brakes engage automatically. The driver makes no decision. There's no time to. A 300 km/h Shinkansen takes about 90 seconds to stop. No warning system in the world buys you 90 seconds. The goal isn't to stop the train before the earthquake arrives. The goal is for the train to be slowing down when it does. This is the part foreign coverage misses. The goal isn't to prevent the accident. The goal is to make the accident survivable. In-service Shinkansen have derailed twice in 60 years. 2004. Niigata Chuetsu earthquake. A trackside Compact UrEDAS detected the P-wave. Power was cut one second later. Emergency brakes engaged 1.5 seconds after that. But the earthquake was directly beneath the train, which was moving at 204 km/h. 8 of 10 cars derailed. The train skidded 1.6 km before stopping. 154 passengers on board. Zero injuries. 2022. M7.4 off Fukushima. A Shinkansen traveling at 320 km/h detected the first tremor and began braking. As the train decelerated toward a stop, a second, stronger quake (M7.4) hit. 16 of the 17 cars derailed. 75 passengers. 3 crew. Zero deaths. No serious injuries. Two other derailments involved empty trains. 2011, Sendai Station, a test train. 2016, Kumamoto earthquake, a transit train. In every case, the warning system had already cut the power before the shaking reached its peak. The system does not stop earthquakes. It does not always stop derailments. It just makes sure the earthquake arrives after the train is already slow. Japan's earthquakes and Japan's trains grew up in the same country, watching the same ground. Somewhere in Japan right now, a Shinkansen is moving at 300 kilometers per hour. Far away, on a quiet coast, a sensor is listening to the rock beneath it. It has been listening since 1992. Every time it was needed, it worked.

@AKAshaperotator @Ricardo_Cd_Oliv o toffoli é formado na usp.
In 1930, rural Virginia, a Black girl born into sharecropping poverty wasn't supposed to leave the tobacco fields. But Gladys Mae Brown had other plans.... Her hands picked crops. Her mind solved equations no one asked her to solve. Her parents, despite barely scraping by, made a choice that defied every expectation placed on them. They kept her in school. She became valedictorian at a segregated high school with torn textbooks and broken windows. She earned a scholarship to Virginia State College in an era when being Black, female, and intellectually brilliant meant the world tried to crush you three different ways. In 1956, she walked through the doors of the Naval Proving Ground in Dahlgren as the second Black woman they'd ever hired. Four Black employees. Hundreds of white men. Most didn't think she'd survive the week. They were catastrophically wrong. Gladys calculated weapons trajectories by hand. Complex differential equations that consumed hours of meticulous work. Her accuracy became legendary. When computers arrived, she didn't resist the future. She learned Fortran. She mastered programming languages. She transformed weeks of calculations into hours. Then came Seasat in the 1970s. The first satellite studying Earth's oceans from orbit. She became project manager. But her true contribution remained hidden in the mathematics. For GPS to function, you need Earth's exact shape. Not close. Exact. Earth isn't a smooth sphere. It's an asymmetrical, gravity-distorted, irregular mass of mountains and ocean trenches. Gladys spent years constructing mathematical models describing every deviation, every curve, every gravitational anomaly of our planet's true form. She analyzed satellite data. She built geoid models. Tedious, invisible, revolutionary work. That mathematics became the foundation of GPS. Every navigation app. Every emergency rescue. Every autonomous vehicle. Every precision farming system. Her equations make it possible. Forty-two years at Dahlgren. Retirement in 1998. GPS fully operational worldwide. Billions of users. Almost nobody knew her name. She raised three children. Earned her PhD at seventy after surviving a stroke. Lived quietly. Until 2018, when someone at a sorority event read her biography aloud. The room went silent. The story exploded. At eighty-eight, Gladys West was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame. The world finally learned her name. She mapped the entire planet. Then everyone forgot. Until they remembered. Gladys West worked alongside her husband Ira West, who was also a mathematician at the Naval Proving Ground. They met at Dahlgren and built both a family and parallel careers in an environment that actively discriminated against them. After retirement, she didn't stop. She earned her PhD from Virginia Tech at age 70, proving that intellectual curiosity doesn't have an expiration date. The GPS system relies on something called the geoid, a mathematical model of Earth's shape that accounts for gravitational variations. Gladys West's calculations helped create these models by analyzing millions of data points from satellite altimetry. Without accurate geoid models, GPS coordinates would be off by hundreds of meters, making the technology essentially useless. Her story remained hidden partly because classified military work doesn't generate headlines. Many pioneers of satellite and navigation technology worked in obscurity for national security reasons. The sorority member who recognized her contribution was reading through Alpha Kappa Alpha biographies when she noticed the GPS connection and brought it to public attention. © Women Stories #drthehistories
One Year On: The Greatest Economic Own Goal in Living Memory A year ago, Donald Trump stood in the Rose Garden, surrounded by charts nobody understood, and declared war on mathematics. He called it Liberation Day. The Financial Times, along with every economist who has read more than a bus ticket, is marking the anniversary with a verdict that should be carved into marble: it failed. On every single front. Spectacularly. Completely. Embarrassingly. Let us be precise about this. Measured against Trump’s own three stated goals, making foreigners pay for doing business with America, narrowing the trade deficit, and punishing China, the tariffs have clearly failed. Not partially failed. Not failed with asterisks. Failed the way a man fails when he drives a Reliant Robin onto a motorway and acts surprised when it rolls. And everyone said so. Economists said so. Trading partners said so. His own party said so. The entire field of international trade theory, developed over roughly two centuries by people who actually read things, screamed it from the rooftops. But Donald Trump, a man whose relationship with economics appears to consist entirely of gut feeling and cable television and 6 casino bankruptcies knew better. The average American household paid an extra $1,700 due to tariffs. Over 65 percent of Americans reported that everyday goods became significantly less affordable. This is what happens when you run the world’s largest economy on instinct and vibes. One year after the Rose Garden ceremony, factory jobs are down and inflation is up. The precise opposite of what was promised. With extraordinary confidence. Then the lawyers arrived. The Supreme Court found that Trump had exceeded his authority, ruling that the declared emergency bore no rational connection to the trade measures imposed. In other words, the legal foundation was nonsense. The government had collected $166 billion in tariffs from over 330,000 businesses on grounds the Supreme Court found unconstitutional. The refund process is now underway. One hundred and sixty-six billion dollars. Collected illegally. From American businesses. The financial markets, bless them, responded with the only appropriate tool available: mockery. The meme “Trump Always Chickens Out” refuses to go away, and the TACO index is now actively used by analysts to price in the president’s chronic habit of retreating. Every serious voice warned this would happen. Trade economists. Former Treasury secretaries. The IMF. The WTO. The EU. Canada. Japan. Basically anyone who had spent more than forty minutes studying how global trade actually works. The man who ignored all of them had previously run a casino into bankruptcy and considered that a learning experience. He was not, it turns out, a fast learner. One year. Zero of three goals achieved. One Supreme Court ruling. One $170 billion refund. One economy paying more for everything and making less of it. Liberation Day. What a name for it. In 1942, Maria Telkes built a device that turned seawater into drinking water using only sunlight. It was ready to save soldiers dying of thirst in the Pacific. But a man at MIT kept delaying the contracts until the war was over and thousands of soldiers had died who could've been saved. When it finally shipped, it saved downed airmen and torpedoed sailors. She then built the first ever solar-heated homes in history. But MIT fired her. She died at 94 with 20 patents and 100+ published papers to her name and yet most people don't even know she existed.....
BREAKING: The United States just took over $126 million from Switzerland’s fighter jet account to cover missile shortfalls in the Iran war. Switzerland did not approve this. Switzerland did not consent. Switzerland had already frozen its Patriot payments after learning deliveries would be delayed four to five years. The US circumvented the freeze. SRF, Switzerland’s national broadcaster, reported on March 26 that Washington redirected Swiss funds originally allocated for 36 F-35 fighter jets to cover Patriot air defence shortfalls using the Foreign Military Sales pooled trust fund, a structure that allows the Pentagon to reallocate payments across a buyer’s contracts without that buyer’s permission. Swiss armaments chief Urs Loher confirmed the diverted amount is a “low three-digit million” Swiss francs and called the situation “very unsatisfactory.” The money Switzerland paid for jets is now subsidising a war Switzerland refused to participate in. Bern halted new arms exports to the US on March 20 citing the Iran conflict. Switzerland rejected two US military flyover requests linked to Iran operations. Two hundred years of armed neutrality, and Washington reached into the account anyway. Here is why. The United States fired 943 Patriot interceptors defending Gulf states in the first four days of Operation Epic Fury per a US Congressional study cited by the Jerusalem Post last week. Lockheed Martin and Boeing produce 620 Patriot interceptors per year combined. In four days, America burned through eighteen months of global Patriot production. The war has consumed roughly one-third of the entire THAAD missile stockpile. Annual THAAD production does not exceed 100 units. The cost asymmetry is what makes the depletion irreversible at current production rates. Each PAC-3 interceptor costs $3.9 million. Each Iranian Shahed drone costs between $20,000 and $50,000. The cost exchange ratio is 114 to 1 in Iran’s favour per Military Times. Iran manufactures an estimated 10,000 Shaheds per month per Reuters. America produces 620 interceptors per year. Iran builds more drones in a single week than the United States builds interceptors in an entire year. Every interceptor fired in the Gulf is one that cannot be delivered to Switzerland, Ukraine, Taiwan, Japan, or Poland. The State Department warned allies on March 27 that Patriot deliveries to Ukraine would face disruptions as the Pentagon prioritises Iran per Quiver Quantitative. Senator Chris Murphy said on record: “We’ve been told again and again one reason we can’t provide interceptors for the Patriot system for Ukraine is that they’re in short supply.” Lockheed signed a framework to quadruple production to 2,000 units per year. That capacity will not arrive for six to seven years. The Pentagon has asked Congress to shift $1.5 billion from other programmes to accelerate procurement per Bloomberg. None of this helps now. The interceptors are depleting now. The allied accounts are being raided now. Switzerland is considering reducing its F-35 order from 36 to 30 jets and accelerating evaluation of European alternatives per Bluewin and Global Defense Corp. Swiss parliamentarians have called the redirection “an unacceptable violation of procurement sovereignty.” The Swiss parliament is preparing formal hearings. Switzerland is the canary. A neutral country with two centuries of armed neutrality just had its fighter jet money taken without consent to feed a four-week-old war that burns 18 months of interceptor production every 96 hours. Every US ally with a pending defence contract should be asking one question: whose account is next? Full analysis: open.substack.com/pub/shanakaans…
