A concert violinist was asked the secret to her extraordinary performances. Her answer: “Planned neglect.” Anything that kept her from playing her best had to go. Maybe we need some “planned neglect” spiritually too. Hebrews 12:1 tells us to “strip off every weight that slows us down.” Not everything weighing you down is necessarily sinful. Some things are simply distracting you from what matters most. Ask yourself: Is this helping me run—or weighing me down?
Is it increasing my appetite for God—or dulling it? Sometimes moving forward means letting something go. Are you race-ready?

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us." —Hebrews 12:1 Periodically, we need to take stock of our lives as believers and look at the things that we’re doing with our time. We need to ask ourselves, “Is it helping me run, or is it weighing me down? Is it speeding me on my way spiritually, or is it slowing me down? Is it increasing my spiritual appetite, or is it dulling it?” David had the right idea when he prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139:23–24 NIV).   What are some things that might be slowing you down as you run the race God has set before you?

What did Jesus do after He rose from the dead that gives us a clue about what Heaven will actually be like? The answer might surprise you. He did two extraordinarily ordinary things—and they give us a fascinating glimpse of what our resurrection bodies will be like. In this short video, I answer two questions people often wonder about: What will our resurrection bodies be like? And will we actually eat food in the afterlife? I think you’ll like the answer!

Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him." —Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) Faithful prayer involves a sense of expectation. That’s not to say that we should have a smug assurance that God will give us everything we ask for when we ask for it. Rather, we should approach God knowing that our heavenly Father will give us His full attention. He is deeply concerned about our lives, our circumstances, and our needs. He promises to respond to our prayers according to His will. And His will is far greater than anything we can conceive of. Ultimately, His answers to our prayers will result in our increased wisdom, preparation, joy, fulfillment, and peace. An unforgiving Christian is a contradiction in terms, an oxymoron. To say that you’re a follower of Jesus Christ and yet harbor unforgiveness in your heart is simply wrong. This reality brings us to our final amazing truth in this week’s devotions: You are never more like God than when you forgive. We reflect the nature of God in a dramatic way when we are willing to forgive because He is a forgiving God. He makes this clear throughout Scripture. Exodus 34:6–7 says, “The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, ‘Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations.’” He wants His people to know that He is forgiving. And if we want to be like Him, we must be forgiving as well. You’ll notice that God doesn’t downplay the seriousness of sin or the effect it has on our relationship with Him. But when we repent, He chooses to forgive, to restore the relationship—not with ulterior motives but rather with a sincere desire for reconciliation. This should be our attitude as well when we forgive others. God wants what’s best for us, even after we’ve done our worst.   Whom might God be calling you to forgive?

Twenty-five years ago, America was changed forever. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives on September 11, 2001. First responders ran toward danger, and ordinary people showed extraordinary courage. I was at Ground Zero two days later, and I’ll never forget what I saw. But in the middle of the devastation, I also saw people turning to God. May we never forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and this truth: Life is short. God is real. Eternity is close.
