Overrated vs underrated in GTM right now (No. 1 will probably get me in jail by you guys) Overrated: → Intent data. Mostly a guess with a dashboard. → 15-step sequences. 58% of replies come from email one. → AI SDRs: 50-70% annual churn tells you enough. → Open rates: Half of them are an Apple privacy setting. → Personalised first lines: AI summarises them away anyway. → Buying another tool: 3 connected tools are better than 20 that don't talk. → Subject line A/B tests: The subject line is rarely the problem. Underrated → Cold calling: Still books a lot of meetings if done right. → Events: A room full of people who came to meet strangers. → A follow-up a week later. Almost nobody sends it. → Writing in prospect's native language: English-only rarely lands outside the UK and US. → A boring, curated list: Verified lists get 5-6x the replies of purchased ones. → Calling a positive reply within 5 minutes: Not tomorrow. Now. → A slightly ridiculous offer: Bold offers win. Notice the pattern? The overrated list is mostly things you can buy. The underrated list is mostly things you have to actually do. AI now reads the inbox before your prospect does. Buyers actively use: Spam filters Inbox agents "Summarise my emails" buttons That carefully personalised first line you spent 10 minutes on? Summarised into nothing. What survives the summary is the offer. And no amount of personalisation makes up for a weak one. Here's how we build offers that get through: → Nail the outcome ↳ What's actually different for them afterwards? ↳ More meetings. Less churn. A hire they no longer need. ↳ If you can't say it in one line, they won't get it either. → Make it specific ↳ "We help companies grow" means nothing. ↳ Who exactly? What exactly? By when? ↳ Numbers and timeframes do the convincing for you. → Remove friction ↳ A 45-minute demo is a huge ask from a stranger. ↳ A 15-minute call, a free audit or a sample list is easy to say yes to. → Then make it a little ridiculous This is the part most people are scared of. The clients with the boldest offers always get the best results. Take the risk on yourself. Give real value before they pay. For example: ↳ A free audit with the fixes, whether they hire you or not ↳ Results first, invoice second It's why we only charge for meetings that actually happen. My video on becoming a GTM engineer got over 5000 views. (Which is pretty crazy for a "no-name" channel) Here's the part a lot of people get wrong: they overcomplicate it. It's one loop, running constantly: ↳ Decide who to target ↳ Build the list ↳ Enrich it ↳ Score it ↳ Write the message ↳ Send it across email, LinkedIn and the phone ↳ Read what comes back ↳ Fix whatever broke, then run it again That's the whole job. The rest is doing it faster, with more leverage. What a normal week looks like → Building or fixing an agent that saves someone an hour a day → Rebuilding a list because the first one was wrong → Reading replies to work out why a campaign is a flop → Wiring two tools together that refuse to talk to each other → Explaining to a founder why month one is slow Less glamorous than the YouTube thumbnails. Much more useful. My predictions for 2027: → "GTM engineer" bootcamps explode. So do people with certificates who've never booked a meeting. → The ones who can sell AND build get paid more. The ones who can only build get squeezed. → SDRs are expected to do half of this job anyway. The line between the roles blurs. → Agents take over most of the grind. The job becomes judgement and QA. → Knowing Clay stops being a skill. Knowing what to build with it is the skill. Which of these do you think I'm wrong about?

everyone's fighting over the same inbox. meanwhile there's a room full of buyers who paid money and travelled specifically to meet strangers. events are the most underrated channel we run, and it isn't the networking. it's the attendee list. pick the event, sign up, pay for the ticket if you have to. then get the list. most conferences either share it or have an app where you can see everyone who's coming. enrich it with clay or anything similar. emails, phone numbers, linkedin. then message them before you go. "hey john, saw you're attending [event]. i'll be there too. we help [x] with [y]. want to grab a coffee during the event?" most say yes, because that's the exact thing they bought the ticket for. it's the only outreach i send where the ask is easier than the ignore. your calendar should be full before you land. then the part almost nobody does: after the event, split the list in two: people you met, and people you didn't. a week later, message everyone you missed. "hey john, saw you were on the attendee list for [event]. looks like we didn't get to catch up. here's what we do. worth finding time to chat if it's relevant?" one event, done properly, is double-digit meetings. most people buy the ticket, collect some business cards and skip both halves that actually produce anything.
