What’s the cleanest and simplest explanation for why 2D (complex numbers) and 4D (quaternions) numbers exist, but not 3D numbers?
Both Ezra and Ben are wrong here, scaling laws are *power laws* which are neither exponential nor logarithmic in resources. It's like y = ax^b for constants (a, b). This slows down exponential hardware progress / investment but it's still exponential.
wait this is very stupid. the relationship is like, the opposite of exponential? the scaling laws (as i understand them) seem to indicate for each bump in capabilities has an exponential increase in cost, which is why each training run uses 10x more FLOPs than the last.

@michael_nielsen Weisskopf did the first calculation that I’m aware of. It’s a classic calculation in “back-of-the-envelope physics,” and you can use it to estimate Olympus Mons and the minimum size of spherical asteroids (~400 km, IIRC). astro.princeton.edu/~burrows/class…

Curious what sets the scale of the height of the highest mountains. What’s the deepest explanation for why it’s ~10km on Earth, not 1 or 100 etc. Can it be deduced from radius and density and not much else? Does it then work for the moon, Mars and so on?
@michael_nielsen There is a well known order of magnitude calculation which relates the size of the mountains, the radius of the planet, and a bunch of fundamental constants (h, c, G). It gives reasonable numbers for Earth, as well as maximal radius of dwarf planets (I'm looking for it)

Q: Can we see highly complex entanglement from a few single-qubit measurements? I always assumed this is impossible as entanglement can be too nonlocal for local measurements to see In arxiv.org/abs/2404.07281, we prove that it can actually be done for almost all quantum states

Based on what they’re saying (and not saying) here, my guess is that this is less than meets the eye. But a technical description of what was done could clear up any doubts.

There’s an technical document that might be posted as a preprint after they get their media splash. Based on a quick look, the 800x number comes from post selection but much more modest real gains with only error correction.
I don’t see an improved two qubit gate compared to bare physical error rate. Seems like a promising incremental contribution.
@quantum_graeme Yes, but to my taste, we need fewer “phases”. The NISQ era was a bit overhyped before and is a bit underhyped now. I think good research questions should speak for themselves.
Honestly happy for Microsoft, who have apparently moved on from their “pretending to have qubits” phase into their “using someone else’s qubits” phase.
