I'm getting about 4 tokens per second running Llama 3 8B locally on my S24 Ultra with the github.com/mlc-ai/mlc-llm demo app. Slow but usable.
I'm a socialist at heart, so I don't like this either. That said, in the limit the only thing that boatloads of compute can buy you is the ability to run a lot of simulations. Maybe you value that, maybe you don't. But even the GPU-poor will make their own virtual heavens.

In a 2021 discussion, both Paul Christiano and Eliezer Yudkowsky agreed that no AI would pass a hard 1-hour Turing Test until the "End Times", i.e. until after the world ended or after a huge economic acceleration. I suspect these predictions will look quite bad within 6 years.

@norabelrose The greatest problem with extreme economic inequality is how it translates into *political* power. The poor being not merely *relatively* poor but actually dispossesed and forced to struggle for their survival is downstream from that.
To be clear, I think there's value in doing theoretical research as a form of economic consumption. I have no issue with that. However, I do think the track record I'm alluding to is highly relevant to the question of whether we should pause AI to do more alignment research.
I don't mean to single out this particular post. I could have shared almost anything else from this genre. The pattern is generally the same: people thought the problem was X, they tried coming up with a solution Y, but in fact neither X nor Y were very relevant for aligning AIs.
Meta releasing near gpt-4 level models is really driving the price of tokens down because anyone can take the weights and optimize the runtime eg groq, togetherapi, fireworks etc. Definitely not good for OpenAI
