Another reason (why performance is not the #1 priority) is that engineers are more expensive than servers. Especially in the current state of cloud computing, it's easier to scale your infrastructure than to scale your engineering org.

In writing code, I used to think performance outweighed other priorities. Now, I realize that velocity is more impactful. Shipping new features quickly with decent code is more effective that writing the perfect code. Things can change and your code might not be there tomorrow.

TIP: Break up long code into multiple chunks with descriptive functions. IMO, it's cleaner than using comments to organize chunks. PLUS you can use your editor to collapse each function!

One of the most common things I hear from fellow grad students is “I wish someone had told me I would need R!” This inspired me to incorporate a demo of R into one of the RA meetings that I planned for my lab this semester👍🏼 Today is the day, wish me luck!
