If being able to focus and stay present is something that you need to "do," you've already lost. You must live in this place—in complete acceptance of all your thoughts and feelings—in order to be at your best when the big moment strikes. Otherwise you're always a step behind.

You won't fix your "phone problem" by putting the phone away—you'll find something else to distract you or worse, punt. The phone is just the symptom of you not being present with whatever emotions you're feeling. Fix this and you're good to go.

Most poker players believe that in order to play your A-game, you must optimize 1000 things to ensure you feel great. Most poker players are also rarely playing their A-game. So maybe this strategy doesn't work, and you should just learn to be present as you are instead.

What should you do to knock a poker player off their A-game? Literally nothing. 99.9% of people eventually will find a way to lose control of their emotions, get stuck in their heads, and play worse all on their own. You just have to be there to collect.

If you use proving people wrong to fuel yourself, you will always seek out people to prove wrong. You can still win this way. But then you'll complain and be miserable about how nobody believes in you—but that's how you set it up.

The mindset coaches want you to believe that your A-Game is something you need to go and "make happen." The truth is the opposite. Your A-Game is what you naturally play once you stop getting in your own way—in other words, when you play from a state of presence.

For most poker players, "I don't know" is a disaster. You avoid the discomfort, then get stuck in your head trying to figure it out from the un-present state—from here you miss details and punt. But for the present poker player, "I don't know" is where the big money get made.
