For the "but a tax credit's not a voucher" folks... The layers of complexity in the tax credit scheme (including tax benefits for rich households and corporations as a bonus!) just obscure the same outcome. Public $ goes to private schools in both cases.

Weird as this seems, seeing these kids enjoying xylophones, made 7th grade memory pop into my head. 7th grade music teacher played a recording of "Aida." I was transfixed. Different teacher for band. (I was on alto sax.) I loved both. My best school memories are musical ones.

You say there is a teacher shortage and yet the principal of Abbott Elementary had to interview 536 applicants for an open teaching position.
@jerseyjazzman The public loves teachers. District admins, legislators, and educational policy wonks tend to hate teachers. I think the former explains the latter. People who want power in schools don’t like that teachers have the ability to stand up for themselves with public support.
I think about this often. I’ve taught, worked in the Senate, been in full-time PhD program, and am now back in a classroom. One thing that stands out: a lot of talk and decisions happen while teachers are *working*. Getting time off is hard. Time off affects schools, classrooms…
There are plenty of people who have never taught who make important contributions to education policy. But there is no place at the table for those who actually do the work. I can't think of another area of policymaking that does this. It's bizarre.
