I haven't seen full matches so I'll reserve my professional judgment, but this Charlie Hughes kid at Wigan looks immense. He plays with such a composed intensity; an intense sense of composure. This is the KPI you look for in young CBs.

I think "PAUSA" emerges from here. Confidence inflates control. Use this increased control to prey on the opponent's tendency to anticipate the game's flow. Thinking is reframed. YOU are the tail that wags the dog. Things aren't happening to you, YOU are happening to things.

The "make the pitch as big as possible" axiom is poorly framed yet ingrained in many players & coaches. The intention is to create more space to play, but the result isn't as simple. It creates space for *isolation* play –– 1v1s, 2v2s, etc. More space isn't always positive.

Under pressure, some CBs have a bad habit of shifting into wide areas to create time & space for themselves. Passing angles diminish. Teammates become isolated. Distances increase. Connectivity is worth less time & space. Stay narrow to increase angles & shorten distances.
Really appreciate @Carra23's insight here on a CB's "side-on" body shape and the "readiness" (proactivity) required to defend open spaces. This is something I wrote almost 2 years ago regarding my process for ID'ing CBs adept at playing in a high line and "controlling" space.

CBs that can hit diagonals when carrying the ball –– such a valuable tool, but a challenging technique to execute consistently. Drive forward to provoke pressure. The opposition's block squeezes centrally to condense space. Diagonal pass to access the newly isolated wide player.
