Can you slow your biological aging by ~4 years with the right diet? A landmark study introduced EDISEA (Empirical Dietary Index for Slower Epigenetic Aging). EDISEA is a dietary score that measures how our daily food choices impact biological aging. How to use it: The model isolated 10 food groups: Add more: • Tea (caffeinated or herbal had the strongest positive weight) • Whole grains • Fruits Cut back: • French fries (highest penalty in the model) • Beer and liquor • Processed meats • Margarine • Sweetened drinks (both sugar and artificially sweetened) Highest adherence was tied to ~4 years slower epigenetic aging, 20% lower mortality risk, and lower risks of dementia and cardiometabolic disease. #Longevity #Epigenetics #Nutrition #Healthspan Source: nature.com/articles/s4146…

Day 21/365 of @longevityfiles - Does who you pick as a partner shape how well you age? The Harvard Study of Adult Development followed participants since 1938, and found something striking: the people most satisfied in their relationships at 50 were the healthiest at 80. In several analyses, that predicted physical health better than midlife cholesterol. Several smaller studies point the same way. In 47 older couples, marital satisfaction buffered mood against bad health days. In another study, women who felt securely attached to their partners had better memory 2.5 years later. Being with the right partner just might be one of the most underrated longevity levers. Source: news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/…

Day 20/365 of @longevityfiles - What is ergothioneine (ET), often touted as the "longevity antioxidant"? It’s a unique, ultra-stable dietary antioxidant that cells use to protect themselves against severe oxidative damage. Our bodies need it to counter cellular stress, but we can't produce it ourselves. It comes almost entirely from fungi. Two recent papers connect why ET matters for cellular aging and where our food supply can source it: 1. Brain Aging & Senescence: Testing 14 mushroom species, researchers found Shiitake had the highest ET levels. In neuronal cell models, shiitake ET extract significantly reversed oxidative stress-induced senescence (cells deteriorating into non-dividing "zombie" states). 2. Mycelium as a Dietary Source: Cultivated Neurospora crassa mycelium (commercial dried Rhiza) contains 0.604 mg/g ergothioneine, putting fermented mycelial biomass on par with cultivated whole mushrooms. Fungi are gaining popularity as an alternative protein and now, as a direct vehicle for cellular defense. Source: sciencedirect.com/science/articl… mdpi.com/2673-8007/6/10…

Day 19/365 of @longevityfiles - Can gut bacteria actually protect our muscle as we age? A systematic review analysed 24 randomised controlled trials to see if probiotic supplementation moved the needle on sarcopenia (age-related loss of muscle mass). The data showed that supplementing with probiotics led to statistically significant improvements in both skeletal muscle mass and global muscle strength compared to placebo. Industry trials, including recent work by Lallemand, report similar functional gains. Turns out, preserving our physical strength might start with what's living in our gut. Creatine is having its moment: This study on 64 healthy, sedentary adults between 45 and 65 showed that the people who took creatine but did not exercise gained roughly 2.4 lbs of lean tissue, i.e. mostly muscle.

This new creatine study is insane. People who never trained took 10g of creatine a day and gained more lean tissue (2.43 lbs) than people who were lifting 3x a week with no creatine (0.31 lbs). Here's the breakdown: (1/18)

Day 18/365 of @longevityfiles - For decades, medicine treated X and Y chromosomes like a one-time developmental switch to determine biological sex. A new review in Science proves they act more like lifelong operating systems, determining the rates at which men and women develop heart disease, cancer, and dementia. The X chromosome carries critical survival and immune machinery. Because women have two (XX), their cells have a safety net: one X is silenced early on, but key protective genes escape or reactivate later in life to bolster resilience. Men (XY) lack that second copy, leaving their cellular defenses more fragile to wear and tear. Meanwhile, as cells divide over decades, chromosomes can be lost. Aging men frequently lose the Y chromosome in circulating blood cells, a glitch linked to heart disease and cancers hiding from the immune system. Tracking sex chromosome loss could soon give us early-warning biomarkers to intervene years before symptoms show up. Read the study: science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

Day 17/365 of @longevityfiles - WAIT A MINUTE… women gotta have how many kids?! A massive @maxplanckpress study tracking 4M+ people found parents generally outlive childless adults, with a wild twist: A *university-educated* mother of four can expect to live the longest. What about men? The data tracks almost identically: • Biological fathers consistently outlive childless men. • For the average biological parent, the longevity "sweet spot" peaks at 2 kids. • But for highly educated parents (moms and dads), mortality drops with each child up to the 4th. Why? • Resource buffering: Being educated and financially stable means you can handle a larger household without the chronic stress penalties seen in lower-income large families. • Lifestyle shifts: Parenting forces healthier daily habits. Fathers in particular suffer significantly fewer fatal accidents and lower rates of circulatory disease. Having kids might add years to your life, but having the stability to raise them without chronic burnout is the real secret ingredient here. Source: mpg.de/14064449/child…

Day 16/365 of @longevityfiles - All that protein is… not gold? At least according to a review of 350+ studies by @baileyknopf and @LammingLab that sparked panic by linking protein restriction to longer lifespans. But there’s a catch: the dramatic lifespan data is from mice, not humans. The biological trade-off: • More protein signals our body to build and maintain muscle. • Less protein triggers cellular cleanup, which, according to researchers, kept lab mice alive longer in the studies. The reality check: Mice in cages die of tumors or metabolic breakdown. Aging humans die from frailty, falls, and muscle loss (sarcopenia). Cellular repair won't help much if we lose the physical strength to get out of a chair. The takeaway: Skip the processed bars. Get protein from whole foods like beans, lentils, tofu, yogurt, fish. Lifespan is the period from birth to death. Healthspan refers to years lived free of chronic disease. Meet Peakspan: the age interval where we maintain at least 90% of our maximum functional capacity. @biogerontology (Alex Zhavoronkov) et al. argue that our biggest demographic challenge is the 20+ year interval where we're clinically "healthy" but biologically declining. Most organ systems hit their ceiling between ages 20 and 35. By age 50, a healthy individual has exited peak performance in nearly every primary system long before biological retirement. Peakspan decay is highly asynchronous across the human body: • 20s–30s (Early-Peaking Systems): Fluid intelligence (processing speed, working memory), VO2 max, muscle strength, and naïve T-cell reserves peak and initiate steady decline. • 40s (The Physiological Inflection Point): Acceleration of gas exchange (DLCO) and kidney filtration (eGFR) loss; liver clearance begins declining by ~0.8%/year, accompanied by sensory shifts. • 45–54 (The Crystallized Cognition Peak): Unlike fluid reasoning, crystallized intelligence (verbal comprehension, vocabulary, systemic knowledge) peaks here and remains stable well into our 70s. • 50s+ (Endocrine and Structural Trajectories): Abrupt endocrine changes (menopause transition), steady androgen decline, and accelerated torque and bone density losses. The core takeaway: Longevity science should focus on defending our peak performance, not just delaying disease. Source: aginganddisease.org/EN/10.14336/AD…

Day 14/365 of @longevityfiles - Is aging just cells forgetting who they are? @lucascamillomd 's paper spotlights Mesenchymal Drift (MD): a process where specialized cells slowly lose their identity. Think of it as cellular memory loss. Our bodies rely on specialist cells, like gut barriers or blood vessel linings. Chronic inflammation and stiffening tissue push these cells to drift into generic scar-like cells as we age. The result? Organs turn rigid, leaky, and prone to fibrosis. The good news: this drift is flexible. Researchers found that short "reset pulses" using Yamanaka factors (proteins that can reset cellular age) can remind cells who they are. Pulsing these factors into cells dials back biological age and halts scarring without wiping cell identity. This connects directly to @susandominus 's NYT piece on cell rejuvenation and organ-specific aging: different organs age at different rates, and full-body anti-aging cures are unrealistic. Instead, targeting mesenchymal drift locally offers a realistic roadmap: rejuvenating specific, failing organs at the root. Source: frontiersin.org/journals/pharm…

Day 13/365: Breaking down @susandominus 's investigation into cellular rejuvenation: Forget sci-fi pills that melt away wrinkles. The leap from Belmonte’s mouse experiments to human reality has a less flashy but far more urgent focus: targeted organ rescue. Delivering reprogramming factors still carries serious cancer risks, which is why scientists are isolating single organs where the risk is contained. Cellular rejuvenation just officially entered human clinical trials, starting with the eye. @lifebiosciences stripped out the cancer-driving Yamanaka factor, proved the remaining three could restore optic nerve function in blinded primates, and is now running safety trials on glaucoma patients. Meanwhile, @altos_labs is deploying billions to target single failing organs like hearts, kidneys, and livers before systemic collapse. The real goal is ending the slow, brutal decay of chronic decline. Reprogramming is finally stepping out of petri dishes and into human clinics, but until it scales, the only proven reset code we have is lifting, sweating, and calorie control. Seeing comments claim this study means "people function better in autumn" made me wonder: is higher brain connectivity necessarily better? 1. More connected doesn't mean smarter: In neuroscience, higher brain connectivity isn't an upgrade. Sharp thinking actually relies on brain modularity, i.e. the ability to keep circuits separate so they don't drown each other out in mental chatter (Gallen & D'Esposito, 2019). The seasonal shifts were concentrated in circuits like the Default Mode Network (DMN), the system active when your mind wanders, replays memories, or drifts. Classic research linked an over-connected DMN to depressive rumination and getting stuck in negative thought loops (Berman et al., 2011), though newer massive studies show the picture is far messier (Yan et al., 2020). The takeaway? Brain connectivity doesn't follow a simple "more is better" rule. 2. The study is cross-sectional: Researchers didn't follow the same people through all four seasons. They scanned completely different groups of people in summer, fall, winter, and spring. Even after matching for age and sex, you can't rule out everyday lifestyle differences between entirely separate groups of volunteers. Why this still matters: If the results are confirmed by tracking the same people over time, it’s a huge deal for clinical drug trials as the seasonal baseline swing was significant. Without accounting for the calendar, researchers could easily mistake a normal seasonal shift for the effect of a treatment or a sign of disease.

Day 12/365 of @longevityfiles: Yesterday, we looked at how nature resets the cellular clock at conception. Today is Part 2 of breaking down @susandominus's investigation into cellular rejuvenation: How scientists learned to trigger that reset in adult cells without destroying them. In 2006, Shinya Yamanaka won a Nobel Prize for discovering four proteins (the Yamanaka factors) that rewind adult cells back to blank stem cells. But when researchers tested this in live mice in 2012, it was fatal: cells lost their identity, organs failed, and lethal tumors formed. Complete erasure of cell age meant erasing cell function. The breakthrough came in 2016 when Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte borrowed a concept from chemotherapy known as intermittent dosing. By pulsing the factors (2 days ON to trigger repair, 5 days OFF to let cells stabilize), the cells didn't lose their identity. Aging cells stopped layering chaotic scar tissue like runaway wet cement and returned to normal duties. The result? The mice regained muscle strength, dark coats, and lived 30% longer, proving that aging has plasticity and isn't a one-way street. Source: nytimes.com/2026/04/27/mag…

@sciencegirl Cookie 🥺

Natural rejuvenation proves the clock can run backward. The youthful instructions are never gone, just buried. If biology can reverse age at conception, can we trigger that reset later? Is aging an immutable countdown, or a dynamic loop we can reset?

The epigenome (literally "above the genome") is the layer of chemical tags and structural proteins that act like a switchboard, telling cells which genes to turn on, which to mute, and how loudly to express them.

Day 11/365: Babies aren’t born young (on a cellular level). We work our way back to youth. @susandominus's deep dive into longevity science is mind-bending, and over the next 3 days, I’m breaking it down. nytimes.com/2026/04/27/mag… Part 1: Nature’s built-in reset button 👇
