At the sidelines of the launch of @AbsaKenya #AbsaNext yesterday, had a brief conversation with @Sitoyo @Absa Group’s Chief Executive, Personal and Private Banking, on the future of banking, fintech and Africa’s next generation. From the changing role of banks to the rise of agentic commerce, here are some of the key takeaways. 1. 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲’𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀 - The future of banking is about understanding customers’ lives and building financial solutions around their needs, rather than simply selling loans, mortgages and other products. 2. 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘀 - Banks bring trust, regulatory expertise and governance, while fintechs bring agility and scale. 𝐄𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Regional regulators and exchanges met in Kampala for the first time since 2019 to advance cross-border trading and investment, as the region pursues deeper integration by 2031. 4. @CBKKenya 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬: Proposed measures include additional capital buffers of up to 2.5% of risk-weighted assets during excessive credit growth and mandatory recovery plans. 5. Standard Chartered’𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐔𝐒$𝟐𝟎𝐌: The investment platform attracted US$20 million in assets under management within four months, offering strategies from global asset managers. 11. 𝗞𝗘𝗬 𝗧𝗔𝗞𝗘𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 FSD Africa 𝟯𝗥𝗗 𝗦𝗨𝗦𝗧𝗔𝗜𝗡𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗣𝗜𝗧𝗔𝗟 𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗞𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 1. 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 - 𝘄𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺. Africa’s domestic savings pools are growing, but too little of that capital is reaching productive investments. The challenge is building the systems and structures that connect available capital to bankable opportunities. The conference repeatedly came back to the need to fix this “transmission mechanism.” 2. 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 - 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵. One of our audience polls showed pension funds as the biggest perceived pool of untapped capital for Africa’s development. But investors need more than opportunities. They need bankable projects, clear cash flows, credible governance, appropriate risk protection and a route to liquidity. 3. 𝗪𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗲-𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 - 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. Whether it is thematic bonds, securitisation, guarantees, pooled vehicles or infrastructure funds, the opportunity is to create structures that can be repeated and scaled. Shared documentation, predictable regulation and standardised processes can make the next transaction easier than the last. 4. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗹 𝗶𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 - 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. One of the clearest lessons from the thematic bond discussions was that sustainability labels cannot compensate for weak credit, unclear repayment structures or poorly prepared projects. First identify the investable opportunity and establish how investors will be repaid. Then build the thematic element around it. 5. 𝗦𝗠𝗘𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺. Individual SMEs are often too small and expensive to assess for institutional investors. Aggregation, better data, standardised due diligence, stronger governance and lower transaction costs can turn thousands of small businesses and receivables into investable pools. 6. 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀 - 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹. We need practical progress on approvals, disclosure, KYC, market infrastructure and currency risk. The starting point is stronger domestic markets, followed by genuinely connected regional markets. My biggest message: We don’t just need more capital. We need better machinery for moving the capital we already have. And that means moving from conversation to execution. 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝟰𝟱% 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗶𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 - third-party research cited by BAT puts illicit trade at 45% of the cigarette market at the end of 2025... meaning roughly one in every two cigarettes smoked in Kenya is illicit. BAT estimates this represents about KSh12 billion in lost government revenue annually. 2. 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗵𝘂𝗯 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗔𝗧 - about 70% of BAT Kenya’s volumes are exported, accounting for roughly half of its revenue. The company currently has around 30% spare manufacturing capacity, creating room to grow exports further... but management says tackling illicit trade in the domestic market is critical to unlocking that opportunity. 3. 𝗕𝗔𝗧 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘆𝗮 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 - the domestic market remains under pressure from illicit trade, while export markets have shown greater stability. With Kenya already serving as one of BAT’s two strategic manufacturing hubs in Africa, management sees further opportunity to strengthen its regional export role. 4. 𝗕𝗔𝗧 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 - shareholders received an interim dividend of KSh10 per share, the same as the previous year and double the amount paid in the comparable period two years earlier. The world of work is changing too fast. How do we prepare this and future generations with skills that actually work? Not just skills that earn them qualifications but skills that help them contribute meaningfully to businesses, solve problems, adapt to change and build businesses of their own. That was one of my biggest takeaway from three days of conversations. A few things stood out: 1. Industry must help shape the skills it needs - not wait until graduation to start looking for talent. 2. Learning must go beyond the classroom. Real workplaces, real problems and mentorship matter. 3. Training systems must keep up with change. And that means trainers must keep learning too. 4. Our skills agenda must match our economic ambitions. If we know the industries we want to build, are we preparing people with the skills to build them? We shouldn't only prepare young people for the jobs that exist today. We should prepare them to create value, and opportunities in the world that is emerging. What does it take to build a business that survives uncertainty and emerges stronger from it? 1. Uncertainty has to be managed — but it can also be an opportunity. The first job is survival: protect liquidity, manage risk and build buffers. But once you've weathered the storm, you have to ask: Where is the opportunity that others aren't seeing? 2. Growth needs to be sustainable. Peter put it beautifully: advance, fortify, then advance again. Growing aggressively means little if you haven't secured what you've already built. 3. Resilient businesses are able to adapt. Sometimes resilience means making uncomfortable decisions ...cutting costs, tightening credit terms or changing direction quickly even when you don't have all the information. 4. The strongest businesses look for opportunity in difficult times. One example Peter shared really stood out: a business facing dollar liquidity challenges changed its strategy, expanded across East Africa and moved into export-oriented agribusiness to create hard-currency inflows and reduce its FX risk. 5. Your banker should be a partner before the storm, not only when it arrives. The strongest relationships are built in good times so that when the difficult times come, you can sit across the table and work through the problem together. Favourite takeaway: You don't have to get every decision right. What matters is your ability to absorb the shock, learn, adapt and keep moving.
